PK in 102nd Minute Lifts Stars Over Rams

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK:  The Texas Wesleyan University men's soccer team (8-7-3) gave top-seeded Oklahoma City University (10-4-2) all they could handle in a Sooner Athletic Conference semifinal match before surrendering a 3-2 contest on a penalty kick by SAC Player of the Year Danny Frid in the 102nd minute.

The Rams gave the Stars their only conference loss of the season, in overtime at Martin Field, and looked to do it again in tournament play on Tuesday.

The Stars scored first when SAC Offensive Player of the Year Ruy Vaz found the net at 8:36.  The Rams were undaunted, netting a Brandon Head goal in the 34th minute and then taking the lead with a goal from Ross McArthur, assisted by Head, in the 36th minute.

OCU came back with a goal just before halftime.  Logan Stewart tied the game off an assist from Alexandre Taiar in the 42nd minute to level the match at intermission.

The Rams put together a number of chances in the second half, but OCU goalkeeper Vladimir Kalajdzic came up with five of his seven saves during the period.

The game rolled through the first overtime and into a second when, just 1:09 in, the Rams were whistled for a foul in the box.  Frid stepped up to take the penalty kick and promptly sent the Stars through to Friday's SAC Championship Game.

The game was remarkably even statistically except in offsides calls.  Both teams took 11 shots, although the Rams led 9-5 in shots on target.  Texas Wesleyan led 3-2 in corner kick opportunities.  The foul count was 17-11 against the Rams, and the Rams were called offside 11 times compared to just four for the Stars.

Arturo Sanchez (6-6-3) recorded two saves, while Kalajdzic made seven stops for the Stars.

The loss ended the Rams' season at 8-7-3 and snapped a streak of three consecutive seasons with 10 or more wins.
