Lady Rams Slip To NCAA DII Mustangs

WITCHITA FALLS, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team (5-2) took a 60-47 loss to NCAA DII Midwestern State University at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Tuesday.

The Lady Rams secured the first bucket of the contest on a Kashyla Fields layup, but the Mustangs made a 10-1 run to take a 10-3 lead with 14:15 left in the first half. Wesleyan then answered with a 7-0 run that featured a pair of Stacey Darnley three pointers, and capped by a Caitlin Boal layup for an 11-10 lead.

The two teams took turns with the lead for the rest of the half, as neither team was able to pull away. A Fields triple put the Rams up 18-16, but the lead did not hold very long. Midwestern State was able to build a 26-20 lead, before Katelynn Threats nailed a jumper to cut the lead to 26-22 before the break.

The Mustangs held on to the lead for dear life to start the second half, as the Lady Rams kept the game very close behind solid shooting. A Threats jumper cut the Mustang lead to 29-28 with 16 minutes remaining. The Mustangs kept a small lead, but could not build it as an Amy Easley bucket from downtown made it a 37-35 game with 11 minutes left in the game.

Texas Wesleyan kept knocking on the door, and finally regained a 42-41 lead on a Boal jumper. The Mustangs used the home crowd to fuel a 7-0 rally to make it a 48-42 game. Threats completed a three point play to cut the lead again to 48-45 with just over five minutes left, but the Mustangs held strong. Midwestern State posted a 12-2 run that spanned the rest of the game to grab the 60-47 win.

Texas Wesleyan outshot the Mustangs from the field 39 percent to 35 percent. MSU outscore the Rams 30-18 in the paint, and out rebounded Wesleyan 48-26 in a game that saw 11 lead changes.

Threats led the Lady Rams with 17 points, while adding six rebounds, and a pair of blocks. Darnley posted 11 points. Fields had six points and five steals.

The Lady Rams will travel to Edmond, OK for a game against Oklahoma Christian University on Thursday, November 20 at 7:00 pm.
