FORT WORTH, TX: Behind an outstanding night from
Onyesonam Nolisa, the Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team (2-1) cruised to a 74-53 win over the University of St. Thomas-Houston (0-1) at the SAGU Classic on Friday.
Nolisa rescued the Rams from a slow start by posting a double-double in the first half with 14 points and 10 rebounds on 7-of-11 shooting including a steal of an inbound pass and layup at the buzzer. Midway through the period a pair of buckets from Nolisa sparked a 14-2 run that left the Rams with a 29-19 advantage. The Rams then pulled away and led 45-27 at the break.
The Celts made one push in the second half. An 11-0 run cut the deficit to 55-42, but that is as close as they would get. Texas Wesleyan's lead swelled to 20 points again at 70-50 with 2:32 to play as they cruised to the 74-53 victory.
Nolisa finished with an impressive line of 20 points, 20 rebounds, 4 assists, a block, and 4 steals. She hit 9-of-15 shots from the field and 2-of-2 at the free throw line. Caneisha Sims and
Stacey Darnley got in on the act with 10 points each.
Amy Easley added 7 points, 6 assists, and 4 steals to the effort.
The Rams dominated the glass 51-41 and the paint 44-16. Texas Wesleyan also forced 27 turnovers and outscored the Celts 33-16 off of turnovers.
UST's Danielle Parks carried her team with 30 points and six rebounds.
The Rams will continue action at the SAGU Classic on Saturday when they take on the University of the Southwest at 1:00 p.m.
