Tigers Get Away From Rams

Box Score

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (5-5) suffered an 11-4 loss to East Central University (3-7) at LaGrave Field on Tuesday.  The Tigers scored all 11 of their runs after the fifth inning.

Jake Howeth remained on a tear to start the season.  The junior outfielder led off a fourth consecutive game with a base hit.  Manny Sanchez followed with a single, and Jose Martinez brought in a pair of runs with a double down the left field line.  Martinez later scored on a single from Dakota Lee, and the Rams led 3-0.

Freshman hurler Alex Lopez kept the Tigers off the board for five innings, but a Texas Wesleyan error left the door open for East Central in the sixth.  With two outs, Luc Pomales knocked a two-run single up the middle.  After a second error allowed Pomales to cross the plate with the tying run, Bryce McKee ripped a two-run double into the gap in left center that was just out of the reach of a diving Howeth.

A leadoff walk to Ariel Adut turned into a Tiger run on a sac fly from Nick Spini in the seventh.  ECU added an RBI single from David Terrazas to lead 7-3.

Texas Wesleyan got a run back in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out RBI single from Ryan Adams.

In the eighth, the Tigers sent ten men to the plate and scored four runs (all with two out) on four hits to stretch their lead to 11-4.

Robert Buitrago (4-1) threw 127 pitches and allowed four runs on ten hits and two walks while striking out seven in 7.2 innings to notch the win.

Connor Zamora (1-1) took the loss after allowing five runs, two earned, on three hits in 1.1 innings.  Lopez allowed two unearned runs on five hits while striking out five in 5.1 innings of work.

Martinez went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored in the loss.  Howeth recorded a pair of hits as well.

The Rams will return to action on Friday when they open a three-game series at No. 21 LSU-Shreveport.  That game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start.
