Lady Rams Retire Eagles

Box Score

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team (13-13, 8-9 SAC) notched a 64-56 win over Southwestern Christian University (8-16, 6-10 SAC) at the Pickens Springer Gymnasium on Thursday night.

Both teams had somewhat of a slow start as Texas Wesleyan grabbed a 6-0 lead capped by a Caitlin Boal lay-in. The Lady Eagles fought back to tie the game at 6-6, but six and a half minutes had rattled off the clock in the meantime.

The Lady Rams regrouped and pulled out to a 15-7 lead, doing a great job of getting the ball inside with a nice lob pass from Boal to Kayla McCray for an easy bucket. Wesleyan stretched the lead on a Liz Handy splash from downtown on an Amy Moody pass and screen for an 18-9 advantage forcing the Eagles to take a timeout. Moody followed with a long three pointer later in the half to keep a 24-15 margin on Southwestern Christian. Wesleyan played their usual strong team defense, taking a 37-23 lead to halftime.

The Lady Rams started the second half with a 4-0 run to extend the lead to 41-23 out of the break. The Lady Eagles got into the full court press to try and get the Rams out of their game, and it worked. The Lady Eagles did a good job of keeping the Rams uncomfortable, which led to missed shots and turnovers, cutting the lead to 49-44 midway through the second half.

Southwestern Christian had plenty of opportunities to make a comeback, coming up with steals and lose balls led by Adrianna White, who made it a 53-49 game with a pair of free throws with less than five minutes remaining. The Lady Eagles just could not convert any points out of the stout defense they played. The Lady Rams never looked comfortable against the full court press, but held off the upset-minded Eagles in a second half defensive struggle, 64-56.

Texas Wesleyan held the Lady Eagles to only 27 percent shooting from the field, while the Lady Rams shot 48 percent. The Rams shot 64 percent from the behind the arc, compared to the 23 percent out of the Southwestern Christian camp. Wesleyan won the rebound battle 37-30 and notched 18 team assists.

Moody led Texas Wesleyan with 18 points and eight rebounds, while adding four assists in the win. Onyesonam Nolisa tallied 11 points, and McCray posted 10 points on the night.

The Lady Rams will celebrate senior day hosting Oklahoma City University on Saturday, February 22. Tip-off is set for a 3:00 p.m. at the Sid Richardson Center.
