No. 5 OWU's Early Offense Sinks Rams

Box Score
FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University men's soccer team (1-2) suffered a 2-0 loss in their home opening match against fifth ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan University (3-0) at Martin Field on Friday.

The Eagles came out firing, netting a pair of goals in the first 11 minutes.  OWU found the net on the first shot of the game when Victor Gouveia played ahead to Aleksander Simovic who found himself alone with the keeper in the fifth minute.  Six minutes later, Texas Wesleyan's Arturo Sanchez made a leaping save of a blast from Gouveia, but Ivan Ristic was there to put the rebound in the back of the net.

The Rams settled down and created chances from there, but OWU's Luka Stojanovic came up with four saves to keep the score at 2-0 at halftime.

Just seconds into the second half, the Eagles were awarded a penalty kick, but Sanchez stopped Ristovic's attempt to keep Texas Wesleyan within striking distance.

Unfortunately, the Rams could not mount a serious threat as they suffered their second shutout of the season.

For the game, OWU outshot the Rams 16-12.  Sanchez made five saves to Stojanovic's six.  OWU led 2-0 in corner kicks and 6-1 in offside penalties.  Texas Wesleyan was whistled for 16 fouls while the Eagles committed six fouls.  Three Eagles were shown a caution while two Rams received the same.

The Rams will return to action on Wednesday, when they host Southwestern Adventist University.  That game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start at Martin Field.
