Steers Rally to Earn Draw with Rams

Box Score

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University men's soccer team (3-3-1) was 37 seconds from victory on Monday before Texas College (1-5-1) scored to pull even and eventually earn a 2-2 double-overtime draw at Martin Field.

After scoring his first collegiate goal on Saturday, Luis Pumarejo earned his first start on Monday.  The freshman from San Juan, Puerto Rico, made the most of his opportunity, scoring the game's first goal in the 15th minute.

Meanwhile the Rams seemed to be well in control of the contest, outshooting the Steers 24-14 and holding a 10-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities in regulation.

The Rams could taste the win when Ross McArthur scored off of a Brien Avalos corner kick, but just 55 seconds later, TC's Bruno Cunha scored on a header to get the Steers on the board.

The win seemed inevitable even after Alex Ellis was shown a second yellow card in the 87th minute and the Rams went a man down.  However, in the final minute goalkeeper Arturo Sanchez came out to cut off a Texas College breakaway, committed a foul and was shown a red card.  With 37 seconds on the clock, Sergio Herrera knocked in the game-tying goal on a penalty kick.

The Rams played the final 20:37 with only nine men.  Texas College did manage to outshoot Texas Wesleyan 6-4 in that stretch, but the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

For the game, the Rams outshot the Steers 28-20 including 10-7 on goal.  Texas Wesleyan controlled the ball to the tune of a 12-4 advantage in corner kicks.  The Rams were slowed by a lopsided 17-8 foul count while Texas Wesleyan players drew five of the game's eight cautions.

The Rams will return to action on Friday, when they host St. Gregory's University in their Sooner Athletic Conference opener.  That game is scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. start at Martin Field.
