Lady Rams Take Down #5 Bison

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team (10-5, 2-2 SAC) powered past #5 Oklahoma Baptist University (11-2, 3-1 SAC) in a 77-59 upset win at the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday.

The Lady Rams did not look like an upset minded team to start. The Bison marched out to a 7-0 lead through five minutes of game time, and later extended the lead to a 16-4 lead midway through the first half. Charity Fowler launched a three from deep behind the arc to push the game to a 15-point, 23-8 lead, and the biggest of the night.

Texas Wesleyan seemed to get their wits about them, charging to a 13-0 run that started with a Katelynn Threats mid-range jumper. Threats put in six more points including the jumper to cap the run, cutting the lead to 23-21 with 3:11 left in the half.  The Bison stopped the rally and held on to a 30-23 lead at the break.

Oklahoma Baptist shot 31 percent in the first half, and converted 12 Lady Ram turnovers into 14 points. The Lady Rams shot 32 percent from the field, and only went 1 of 5 from behind the arc.

Caitlin Boal nailed a three to start the second half to make it a 30-26 game, and the Lady Rams made it a ball game. Amy Easley was fouled on a three pointer and knocked down all three to cut the lead to 38-37. Easley took charge and tied the game after a smooth lay-up to tie the game at 39-39. An Easley triple gave Texas Wesleyan a 42-39, and the Lady Rams took control of the game. Stacey Darnley hit on a shot from behind the line, and Easley followed that with bucket from downtown to make it a 48-43 Ram lead. Darnley slashed through the lane to put in a layup for a 55-45 lead.

The Lady Rams dominated the rest of the ball game, leading by as many as 19 and cruised to a 77-59 upset victory.  The Lady Rams shot a balmy 62 percent from the field in the second half, and went 7-10 for 70 percent from behind the arc. Wesleyan out-shot the Bison for the game 48 percent to 31 percent.

"The team played great team defense and moved the ball on offense," said head coach Bill Franey, "Lots of the things had to go well for us to even compete with Oklahoma Baptist. They are very talented and very well coached, but we just worked very hard and it paid off. "

Threats posted a double-double on 18 points and 19 boards. Darnley led the Rams with 20 points. Easley had an outstanding performance with 19 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists.

The Lady Rams will take on John Brown University on Thursday, January 15. Tip-off is set for a 6:00 pm start at the Sid Richardson Center.
