PLAINVIEW, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team (9-5, 1-2 SAC) took a 79-58 loss to (RV) Wayland Baptist University (6-6, 2-1 SAC) at the Hutcherson Center on Thursday.
The Flying Queens took a 5-0 run to bounce out to a 9-4 lead to start the contest, before
Stacey Darnley put in a three pointer to make it a 9-7 game. Â The teams battled midway through the first half, as
Cheyenne Swoopes dropped in a jumper to cut the lead to 17-15. The Lady Ram offense stalled and the Queens took full advantage with a 14-0 rally to take a 31-15 advantage with 4:15 remaining in the half.
Wayland Baptist kept the pressure on, building a decent lead from there behind very solid shooting. Â The Queens took a comfortable 33-20 lead into halftime. WBU used their size to dominate the paint, 24-6, while limiting Wesleyan to only 21 percent shooting from the field.
While Texas Wesleyan shot better in the second half, so did the Flying Queens, and Wayland maintained a double digit lead for most of the second half. A 6-0 rally capped by another Darnley triple to make it 42-35, but Wayland Baptist answered. A
Katelynn Threats power layup cut the lead to 49-41 at the 11:06 mark, but the Queens answered again and never looked back. WBU went on to take a 79-58 win.
The Lady Rams made strides in the paint, but could not stop the Wayland offense, drawing even in points in the paint at 18-18. Texas Wesleyan also shot better in the second half, posting 38 percent from the field. Unfortunately, the Flying Queens also shot better at a 43 percent clip. For the game, the Rams shot 29 percent from the field, while WBU shot 41 percent.
Darnley led the Lady Rams with 21 points. Threats notched a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Onyesonam Nolisa posted 11 points and seven boards in the contest.
The Lady Rams will look to get back on track with a home game against Oklahoma Baptist University on Saturday, January 10. Tip-off is set for a 3:00 pm start at the Sid Richardson Center.Â
