BETHANY, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball (18-9, 7-3 SAC) ended a ten match road trip with a 3-1 (26-28, 25-20, 25-21, 25-23) win at Southwestern Christian University (11-16, 4-7 SAC) on Saturday.
The Eagles gave the Rams all they could handle in their road finale, starting with a 4-0 run to start the match. Texas Wesleyan recovered and tied the set at eight apiece on an
Alanna Hayhurst ace.
Kristina Gafford gave the Lady Rams their first lead with a sneaky kill at 10-9. The two teams traded the lead until Wesleyan trailed 24-23.
Starnisha Bodie tied the set with a kill to keep her team in it. Hayhurst and Bodie teamed up for a block to take a 26-25 lead, but the Eagles rattled off three straight points to take the first set 28-26.
Again the Eagles blasted out in the second set with a 4-0 run, but the Lady Rams recovered quickly with a 6-0 rally on a Bodie, Gafford block.
Abby Zipoy kept Wesleyan in the lead with a kill to make it 12-9, and kept the pressure on with a
Kiersten Mebane kill to extend the lead to 17-11. Zipoy put down the last two points to lift the Rams to a 25-20 win.
The Lady Rams continued this momentum into the third set holding a narrow lead, but a lead none the less. The Eagles tied the set at 7-7 and finally took the lead on a TWU attack error to make it 12-11. Stinnett and the Rams regained the lead at 15-14, and then a 4-0 rally capped by another Stinnett kill gave the TWU some breathing room at 20-16. Zipoy made it set point on a smash and the Eagles tried to make a comeback but committed an error to give Wesleyan a 25-21 win.
Texas Wesleyan fell behind 6-1 to start the fourth set and the Eagles tried to hang on to force a fifth game. The Lady Rams chipped at the lead and took a 6-0 run mostly due to Southwestern Christian errors to take a 13-10 lead. A
Shaughnessy Hearn ace made it a 15-11 advantage before the Rams took control of the game and a Stinnett kill made it a 23-20 lead. The Eagles cut the lead to 24-23, but another SCU error led to a 25-23 win for Wesleyan.
The Lady Rams went 7-3 on the road stretch, including four consecutive conference wins at the end. With the win, TWU is now 7-3 in conference play and sit third in the standings, one game ahead of John Brown (6-4).
Zipoy led the attack with her fifth consecutive double-double with 17 kills and 15 digs. Stinnett also earned a double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs. Gafford posted 38 assists in the win. Hearn notched 26 digs and three aces in the win.
