FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women's soccer team (6-2-1, 1-0-1 SAC) played to a 2-2 draw with Wayland Baptist University (1-5-2, 0-1-1 SAC) at Martin Field on Saturday.
The Rams were in control in the first half, but could not finish a goal. Texas Wesleyan's
Nikki Lockwood and Wayland Baptist's Bailey Stengler each made three saves to keep the game scoreless at halftime.
Just over a minute into the second half,
Marisol Saucedo found
Theresa Garsztecki for her Sooner Athletic Conference leading 10th goal of the season.
In the 48th minute, the Rams dodged a bullet when Annysa Plata's shot glanced off the post. In the 60th minute, WBU's Jodian Morris broke through the back line and tied the game. Four minutes later, Morris got by Lockwood on a breakaway and tapped in her second goal of the game.
With time beginning to wind down in the 81st minute, Garsztecki took a free kick from the near right wing. Her ball on the ground crossed through the box and found
Kaitlin Bush for an equalizing goal.
The Rams had their chances in extra time, but three corner kicks in the second OT period all went for naught while the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
For the game, the Rams outshot the Pioneers 26-20. Lockwood and Stengler each made six saves, and corner kicks were even at 4-4. WBU was called offside 6 times to just 2 for the Rams. The Pioneers also battled a 12-4 foul count.
"Just an off day," commented head coach
Josh Gibbs. "We had great ideas all day, but it came down to poor execution. The effort was great, and we were dangerous. We were just poor in the final pass. I've got to do a better job of having the girls fresh and ready to play. We will be ready when we hit the road on Tuesday."
The Lady Rams return to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Oklahoma City, OK, to take on Mid-America Christian University. That game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start.
