FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (22-10, 11-4 SAC) rebounded nicely with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-23) win versus Southwestern Assemblies of God University (17-13, 7-9 SAC) at the Sid Richardson Center on Tuesday.
The Lady Rams posted a strong performance to further solidify the third spot heading into the final match of the season. TWU got their tenth home win of the season after controlling the contest from the first whistle.
Wesleyan zipped out to a 7-2 advantage to start the first set, highlighted by a two thunderous
Starnisha Bodie kills that gave the home crowd something to cheer about. Zipoy posted four consecutive kills to help the cause, and Bodie finished off a 12-1 run to make it a 21-7 lead.
Alanna Hayhurst threw down a kill to give the Rams a 25-11 first set win.
The Lady Lions took a 4-3 lead on a Summer Skillern kill, but the Lady Rams quickly turned that around taking an 11-7 lead on a
Shelby Stinnett smash that started a 5-0 rally to make it a 15-7.
Kiersten Mebane made it a 10-point, 18-8 game with a touch kill that fooled the defense. Stinnett capped the second set at 25-13 with a strong kill to give Wesleyan a 2-0 match edge.
The Lady Lions put up a fight in the third set, as the Rams started to incorporate their bench. Mebane tied the set at four apiece, and Stinnett made it a 12-5 lead later in the set. SAGU eventually tied the set at 15-15 and again at 19-19 before taking a 20-19 lead, all due to Lady Ram miscues. Caitlin Paschall gave the Lions a 22-20 lead with a kill that prompted a Wesleyan timeout. Zipoy hit a top-notch kill before
Kristina Gafford caught SAGU sleeping with a kill to tie the set at 22 apiece. Zipoy ended things with back-to-back kills to take the third set 25-23, and the match 3-0.
Zipoy has successfully earned a double-double in ten consecutive matches. Tonight she had 15 kills and 13 digs. Stinnett also tallied a double-double with 10 kills 13 digs. Gafford notched 37 assists in the win.
Shaughnessy Hearn led all players with 21 digs.
Texas Wesleyan will celebrate senior day on Thursday, November 5 when they take on Mid-America Christian University starting at 7:00 pm.
