Lady Rams Fall In Two At Bash

MANSFIELD, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (3-4) dropped a 12-0 game against Cameron University (9-2) before falling in a 12-8 shootout to Lubbock Christian University at the Mansfield North Texas Softball Bash on Friday.

The wind played a major factor in the first day of the tournament as the southeasterly wind gusted up to 30 MPH at times, turning routine pop-ups into trouble.

In the game with Cameron, the Aggies used the wind to carry the ball over the short fence, twice in the top of the first inning for a three run cushion. Cameron spurred a seven run rally in the second inning to take an early 10-0 advantage.

The Lady Rams found themselves down 12-0 in the bottom of the fourth when Lauren Gunter hit a line drive shot to dead away center that was on track to clear the fence, but was snagged and the Aggies kept the Rams off the board.

The Lady Rams could not cut into the lead and dropped the game 12-0 in five innings. Gunter went 1 for 2 with a base hit through the right side. Haley Neill went 1 for 2 in the game, while Kayla Prachyl went 1 for 3 with single into right field.

In the second game Texas Wesleyan took on Lubbock Christian, but in the top of the first the Lady Rams were fighting the inconsistent and very small strike zone from the plate umpire. The Chaps enjoyed six walks in the inning, scoring five runs on one hit.

The Lady Rams paid no mind to the adversity and cut in the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Kendall Kizer lined a laser to third base for a single to set up a Gunter sacrifice fly to left field to plate the first run. Amber Marlett followed that up with a home run blast to bring in three more run to make it a 5-4 game.

The Chaps extended the lead in the fourth inning on a Molly Davison grand slam to make it 9-4. The Lady Rams got a run back in the bottom of the inning that started with a Dani West triple that beat the center fielder. West would score on a passed ball to make it 9-5 LCU.

Lubbock Christian added an insurance run in the fifth inning with a Faith Koria RBI double to extend the lead to 10-5. Texas Wesleyan fought back with trio of runs in the fifth inning. Kizer led off the inning with a single up the middle. Aizia Azarcon ripped a single into right field to bring home a pair of runs. Lauren Davis followed that up with a RBI single to a diving Chaparral shortstop to cut the lead to 10-8.

The Chaps added two more runs to pad the lead in the seventh and Wesleyan could make up no ground in the home half of the inning, falling 12-8.

Kizer went 3 for 4 with a run scored. Marlett went 1 for 4 with three RBI. Azarcon went 1 for 4 with two RBI for the Rams.

Texas Wesleyan will see UT-Permian Basin at 10:00 am and Baker University at 12:00 pm tomorrow in day two of the tournament.
