Rams Take Two From Avila

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (3-3) swept a doubleheader from Avila University (1-2) at Sycamore Park on Saturday.  The Rams took game one 8-1 and game two 7-3.

In game one, the Eagles put their leadoff man on with a single and bunted courtesy runner Kenny Baker down to second, but Texas Wesleyan right fielder Dusteyn Suttle threw Baker out at third for an inning-ending double-play.

In the bottom of the first, the Rams started off with consecutive singles from Rod Lewis, Jake Howeth, and Tyler Kamtz to snag a quick 1-0 lead.  Howeth later scored on an Avila error, and an RBI single from Ryan Mendez pushed the score to 3-0.

In the fourth, Quavian Lawson led off with a single to right and went all the way to third when the ball eluded the AU right fielder.  Lawson scored on a wild pitch.  Ryan Mendez also singled and scored in the inning, and the Rams led 5-0.

The Rams added an RBI triple from Lawson in the fifth.  In the sixth, Texas Wesleyan capped the scoring with an RBI single from Lewis and an RBI groundout from Howeth.

AU's Troy Prasertsit, who went 3-for-4 and reached base all four times, broke up the shutout with a two-out RBI single in the seventh.

Alex Lopez (1-0) used 101 pitches to toss the complete game.  He scattered nine hits while allowing just the one run and striking out five.  Cody Lewis (0-1) took the loss after allowing six runs, four earned, on eight hits in five innings of work.

Lewis, Lawson, and Mendez each had two of Texas Wesleyan's ten hits in the contest.

In game two, the Eagles took advantage of a Texas Wesleyan error to score two runs with three base hits in the third inning.

Suttle answered in the bottom of the inning by leading off with a triple and scoring on a sac fly from Jake Davis.  An AU error later plated Jake Howeth and allowed the inning to continue.  Lawson blasted a two-run triple into right, Ryan Mendez ripped an RBI double down the left field line, and the Rams led 5-2.

Avila got one run back in the top of the fourth with an RBI double from Ben Koerner.  Suttle led off the bottom of the fourth with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a single from Davis.  With two outs in the inning, Howeth scored on a single from Tyler Kamtz to bring the score to 7-3.

Ben Russell and Avery Sullivan took care of the Eagles from there.  Russell (1-0) went 5.2 innings and allowed three runs, one earned, on nine hits while striking out three.  Sullivan finished off the final 1.1 innings to notch his first save of the season.

Lewis went 3-for-4 with an RBI from the leadoff spot for Texas Wesleyan.  Suttle added two hits in three at bats.
