GRAND PRAIRIE, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (4-4) took the rubber match of a five game series with Avila University (2-3) at QuikTrip Park on Monday. The Rams won 8-7 in eight innings thanks to a walk-off double from
Jake Howeth.
Avila got on the board first with an RBI single form Brandon Chandler in the top of the first. The Rams looked like they would answer against Avila's freshman right-hander Saul Nunez in the bottom of the inning, but Nunez left the bases loaded after allowing three straight singles to start the inning.
Singles from AU's Troy Prasertsit, Kyle Simmons, and Stephen Montisano put two more runs on the board in the third.
Joel Rickman led off the bottom of the fourth with a pinch-hit double and then scored on a double from
Jose Martinez to get the Rams on the board.
In the fifth inning, a pair of Texas Wesleyan errors led to three more Eagle runs as Avila took command of the contest at 6-1.
A resilient Texas Wesleyan offense responded immediately in the bottom of the fifth. With two-outs, and runners at first and second, Rickman delivered a second straight double to bring in a run.
Jonathan Bravo followed with a two-run single and the margin was cut to 6-4.
In the sixth,
Dusteyn Suttle and
Jake Davis, the eight and nine hitters in the order, led off with singles. A ground ball from
Rod Lewis plated Suttle, and Howeth laid down a sacrifice bunt to put runners at second and third with one out.
Tyler Kamtz stepped to the plate and singled through the right side to put the Rams on top 7-6.
In the top of the seventh of the scheduled seven-inning contest, Anthony Zicarelli drew a leadoff walk, and with two-outs Chandler singled through the left side to tie the game at 7-7.
The game rolled to extra innings. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth and Davis at second base, Howeth drilled a double over the AU right fielder's head for the game-winner.
Avery Sullivan (1-0) picked up the win with two innings of relief work. He allowed no runs on a hit and a walk while striking out one. EJ Merlo (1-1) took the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits in three innings pitched.
Lewis, Howeth, and Kamtz combined to go 6-for-13 out of the one, two and three spots in the Texas Wesleyan order. Rickman also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of doubles, and Davis was 2-for-4 on the day.
The Rams will return to action on Saturday, when they host Doane College. That doubleheader is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start at QuikTrip Park.
