DALLAS, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (17-21) took a pair of losses at Dallas Christian College on Wednesday. The Crusaders eeked out a 1-0 win in game one before taking game two, 9-4.
In game one, the Crusaders turned a leadoff walk in the third into a run with a sac fly from Kale McQuillen.
That score held entering the seventh and final inning.
Jake Howeth singled with one out and stole second.
Jose Martinez then shot a single through the left side sending Howeth around third and toward the plate. In a close play at the plate, Howeth appeared to slide well ahead of the tag, but the home plate umpire ruled him out, and the game ended in a 1-0 DCC victory.
Kyle Spurgen threw all seven innings and allowed three hits while striking out six in the win. The disappointing end spoiled a fine outing from
Stephen Yancey (0-5). Yancey allowed a run on three hits and four walks while striking out six in six innings pitched.
In game two, the Rams wasted no time jumping ahead.
Dylan Measells and
Hayden Muns led off with back-to-back doubles, and
Jose Martinez delivered a sac fly to give the Rams an early 1-0 lead.
The Crusaders tied the game with a two-out RBI single from Chris Wallace in the second. That kept the inning alive for an RBI knock from Nick Tovar, a run on a wild pitch, and an RBI double from Ronald Jackson that left Dallas Christian with a 4-1 lead.
A two-out Texas Wesleyan error gifted the Crusaders five more runs in the fourth as Jordan Nowels, Corey Lee, and Reid Babbit followed a strikeout/E2 with three consecutive hits.
Jake Davis led off the fifth with his first career home run.
The Rams still trailed 9-2 in the seventh.
Tyler Kamtz led off with a double and scored on a line drive to second that was dropped. Davis then singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch to cap the scoring at 9-4.
Bryce Jones earned the win, tossing all seven innings and allowing four runs on nine hits.
Jason Price (2-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits and a walk in two innings pitched.
Ricky Hull tossed two innings of scoreless relief for the Rams.
Texas Wesleyan will return to action with a three-game Sooner Athletic Conference series with Southwestern Christian University. Friday's opener is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start at QuikTrip Park.
