Lady Rams Routed By Cavs

BURLESON, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (14-24, 6-15 SAC) took two losses to tenth ranked Saint Gregory's University (28-8, 12-6 SAC) in the Strike Out Cancer game at Lady Spartan Field at Centennial High School on Sunday.

The Lady Rams and Cavaliers stayed locked in a scoreless tie for longer than either team was comfortable with, as each pitcher kept the offenses off the board.

The Lady Rams had runners on second and third in the bottom of the sixth inning, but were turned away to keep the game tied at 0-0.

In the top of the seventh the Cavs got a runner on due to a fielding error, and a base hit by Maria Mercado put runners on second and third with one away. Amanda Windham did a masterful job of painting the corners for a strikeout, and worked all the way back from a 3-0 count to get the third out of the inning and keep St. Gregory's at bay.

It took extra innings to for either team to get on the board, but in the top of the eighth Melanie Gladden lifted a fly ball to right field that was helped out of the park by 20 plus MPH wind to take a 2-0 lead.

The Lady Rams could not get anything going in the home half of the inning, dropping game one 2-0.

Windham (4-9) suffered the loss, but put up impressive numbers despite it. She tossed a shutout through seven of the eight innings, gave up two runs on eight hits, walked none, and fanned three.

The Lady Rams got off to a rocky start in the game two and after some questionable calls put runners on first and second, Wesleyan had a few mishaps that translated into Cavaliers runs. Mercado hit a sacrifice fly to center to make cap the inning with a 3-0 cushion before the Rams could get to bat.

Texas Wesleyan got one back in the bottom of the first inning that started with a Kayla Prachyl lead off base hit. Prachyl took advantage of a pair of wild pitches to make it a 3-1 game.

The Cavaliers added three more in the second. After an error by the Lady Ram catcher allowed a run to cross, Brooklyn Sparks lined a shot down the left field line for a two RBI double to make it a 6-1 lead.

The Cavs kept finding ways to score and the Lady Rams only made a small dent in the seventh on a Lauren Gunter RBI single down the right field line to make it a 10-2 game, which would ultimately be the final in five innings.

The Lady Rams wore pink uniforms in honor and memory of the victims and families affected by cancer. The Lady Rams raised money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation at the field and Wesleyan graduate Yvonne Hensley, a cancer survivor, threw the ceremonial first pitch before game one.

The Lady Rams will continue the home stand with a double header against Southwestern Christian University on Wednesday, April 22 starting at 3:00 pm at Sycamore Park.
