GRAND PRAIRIE, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (17-13, 9-3 SAC) dropped a 6-4 decision to No. 5 Oklahoma City University (28-8, 11-2 SAC) in the opener of a three-game Sooner Athletic Conference series at QuikTrip Park on Friday.
The Rams got on the board in the second inning, when
Rod Lewis singled and scored on a double from
Ryan Mendez. Texas Wesleyan had the bases loaded with one out, but Carlos Chavez worked out of the jam with no further damage done.
The Stars answered right back in the top of the third with an RBI single from Joe Lytle. Lytle later scored the go-ahead run on a Texas Wesleyan error.
The Rams tied the game in the fourth with a two-out RBI single from
Jake Howeth, but Jared Baker gave the Stars the lead for good when he led off the fifth with a solo homer.
A two-run triple from Lytle and an RBI single from Connor Lynch stretch the OCU lead to 6-2 in the eighth inning.
The Rams would not go quietly. Texas Wesleyan started the bottom of the eighth with a pinch-hit single from
Hayden Muns and a walk to
Jake Davis.
Dusteyn Suttle and Howeth both knocked in runs to cut the margin down to 6-4.
In the ninth, the Rams were down to their final out when Mendez drew a walk.
Garrett Crook then reached on an error to bring the winning-run to the plate; however, Holden Lyons was able to record the final out and secure his third save of the season.
Chavez (5-0) earned the win after allowing two runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out three in 7 innings. Lyons worked the final 1.2 innings for the save.
Alex Lopez (1-3) took the loss after allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits and three walks while striking out six in 4.2 innings.
The Rams and Stars will complete their three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start at QuikTrip Park.
