Lady Rams Walk-Off To Sweep SAGU

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (14-14, 6-6 SAC) picked up a couple of wins over Southwestern Assemblies of God University (3-25, 0-14 SAC) at Sycamore Park on Tuesday. The Lady Rams grabbed a 6-1 win before taking a 4-3 walk-off win in game two.

The Lady Rams wasted no time, picking up a pair of runs in the first inning. Dani West hit a bloop single to center field and stole second to put herself into scoring position. With two outs, Lauren Gunter blasted a long fly ball down the left field line for a two run home run to make it a 2-0 lead.

The Lady Rams added three more in the second inning, starting with a Chelsea Anderson RBI double to left field. Courtney Kelly moved the runner with a RBI groundout second base. Amber Tucker went right back up the middle to plate another run for a 5-0 cushion.

The Lady Lions got on the board in the top of the sixth inning. Kelsey Coburn lined a base hit into center field to get the inning going. A fielder's choice play kept a runner on the bases for a Katelyn Veteto RBI double to right to make it a 5-1 game.

Texas Wesleyan got the run back after Kayla Prachyl led off the inning with a single through the right side. She advanced to second on a passed ball, and was waved home after a throwing error. That brought the score to 6-1 that would eventually be the final.

Lauren Wernet (4-4) picked up the win. She tossed all seven innings, allowed only one run on five hits, walked two, and sat down four.

Gunter went 1 for 3 with two RBI. Lauren Davis went 2 for 3. Anderson went 1 for 2 with a RBI in the win.

The two teams played four scoreless innings in game two. Wesleyan broke the offensive silence in the bottom of the fifth. Aizia Azarcon singled through the left side to set up a Prachyl single through the right side to put a runner in scoring position. Anderson launched a ball into right field for a two RBI triple. Davis followed with a RBI double to make a 3-0 Ram advantage.

SAGU answered in the sixth. Amber Gignac started a string of four consecutive base hits highlighted by a Coburn RBI single to right field. The ball got away from Azarcon in right field allowing a second run to score. Coburn tried to take home to tie the game, but quick reactions by Anderson had the runner thrown out at the plate.

The Lady Lions tied the game in the seventh after a dropped third strike allowed the tying run to reach base. Brittany Johnson reached on a fielder's choice to represent the tying run. Johnson stole second, and a passed ball got the runner to third. Gignac snaked one just passed the pitcher for a RBI single, evening the game at 3-3.

Haley Neill started the bottom seventh inning with a base hit up the middle of the diamond and Prachyl moved the go ahead run into scoring position with bunt single to the catcher. Anderson loaded the bases with a walk on a very good, very long battle at the plate. Davis answered the call with a walk-off RBI shot to right field for the 4-3 win.

Amanda Windham (4-5) earned the win with a seven inning effort. She surrendered three runs, one earned, on six hits, with two walks, and three strikeouts.

Prachyl went 3 for 3. Anderson went 2 for 2 with a walk and two RBI. Davis went 2 for 3 with two RBI.

The Lady Rams will travel to Bethany, OK for a meeting with Southwestern Christian University on Friday, April 10 starting at 4:00 pm.
