FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women's soccer team (4-1) took a narrow 1-0 win over the University of St. Thomas-Houston (1-4-1) at Martin Field on Friday. With the shutout, goalkeeper
Nikki Lockwood tied the school record with her 16th career shutout.
Lockwood, a junior from Arlington, TX, posted seven shutouts in each of her first two seasons with the Lady Rams and has two already this season. The win was the 26th of her career, just one shy of another school record.
The lone goal of the game came early when
Theresa Garsztecki netted her 7th goal of the season 10:09 into the game.
The teams played very evenly from there on. The Rams had the next best scoring opportunity in the 66th minute when they got a pair of corner kicks from
Kailene Allis and
Shrareh Asadi that produced very narrow misses.
Lockwood (4-1) made four saves to hold the record-tying shutout. UST's Emma Pinkerton made six stops in the loss.
Both teams took 15 shots while the Rams led 7-4 in shots on goal. The Rams had 7 corner kicks to 5 for the Celts. UST was whistled for 9 fouls to just 4 for Texas Wesleyan.
"This was a great performance all the way around," said head coach
Josh Gibbs. "I'm so proud of our players. They have worked so hard to get to a point where we finally clicked, and it happened to be today against a well-organized and well coached team."
Gibbs went on to say that three games in seven days has been a tall order. "We have to turn around and play another tomorrow. It will be tough, but we have to fight through it. Right now I'm just really proud of the girls."
The Rams are right back in action tomorrow afternoon with their third game of the week as they host the University of the Southwest. That game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start at Martin Field.
