FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women's soccer team (5-1) completed a 3-0 week with a 6-1 thumping of the University of the Southwest (1-2) at Martin Field on Saturday. The win was the 27th career victory for goalkeeper
Nikki Lockwood, tying the school record.
The record performance for Lockwood came just one day after she tied the school record for career shutouts.
The game was the third in five days and the second day in a row that the Lady Rams played in the teeth of the Texas sun.
The Lady Rams went to work and put the game out of reach early however. In the 8th minute,
Rawan Ashrawi found
Kaitlin Bush for the game's first goal, and the first of three for Bush.
Shrareh Asadi scored in the 12th minute, and
Kailene Allis hit Bush for another goal in the 21st minute to make it 3-0.
That score held at the break. The Lady Rams were well on their way to the third shutout of the season, but a foul in the box in the 70th minute awarded the Mustangs a penalty kick. Nicole Daigle converted to put USW on the board.
The Lady Rams responded with a
Theresa Garsztecki goal just 29 seconds later. Garsztecki knocked in her 9th goal of the season in the 83rd minute (assisted by
Lauren Marquez) to make it 5-1.
Kaitlin Bush bookended the game. She got the scoring started in the 8th minute and capped the scoring in the 89th minute on an assist from
Tiffany Marino.
The Lady Rams outshot the Mustangs 36-11 and led 5-4 in corner kicks. The Rams were whistled for 9 fouls and called offside 5 times while USW was called for 4 fouls and no offside.
Lockwood made 6 saves in the win, while Stephanie Pagan and Makenzie Hargrove combined to make 10 saves for the Mustangs while allowing three goals apiece.
"This was a great game considering we played our fourth game in eight days," said head coach
Josh Gibbs. "I'm really impressed with our girls. It hasn't been the prettiest soccer at times, but it has always been what we needed to win. They will get some much deserved rest, and we'll just keep trying to get better with every touch of the ball. This team has me excited to get to training every day, and it's a real honor to coach them."
The Lady Rams return to action on Friday, September 25, when they travel to Edmond, OK, to take on NCAA Division II Oklahoma Christian University in their final tune-up before opening Sooner Athletic Conference competition.
