OKLAHOMA, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team (8-12, 3-7 SAC) notched a 78-66 win over Mid-America Christian University (8-10, 5-5 SAC) at the Gaulke Activity Center on Saturday.
Â
The Lady Rams played a well-managed road game and squashed any tries at a home team comeback to snap a five game losing skid. With the win, Wesleyan was also able to avenge an 81-80 home loss to the Evangel in the conference opener back on December 5
Â
Chervelle Cox gave the Lady Rams a four spot with back-to-back jumpers to open the contest.
Courtney Chargois hit two-point shot for an 8-5 lead before the Evangels posted a 4-0 push to take a 9-8 lead. The game was close at 12-11 before Texas Wesleyan grabbed an 8-0 rally that included two
Alycia Louallen triples and capped by a
Katelynn Threats turn around shot in the paint for a 20-11 lead. The last 1:08 was pretty quiet as the only points were a pair of MACU free throws by Kelli Tolar to end the quarter at 20-13.
Â
Wesleyan quickly got out to a 10-point advantage to start the second frame with another Threats jumper for a 25-15 lead with eight minutes remaining in the half. Wesleyan kept a nice gap over their opponent down the stretch and took a 38-27 advantage into the break.
Â
TWU posted a 10-4 clip over MACU in the points in the paint category. Wesleyan also outshot the Evangel 46 percent to 30 percent from the field in the first half.
Â
Mid-America Christian started the third quarter with an 8-2 run to chop the lead down to a two-point, 40-38 game. The Lady Rams stopped the game from tilting in the wrong direction by frosty shooting. Threats hit another bucket to give the Rams a 46-41 edge, but again the Evangels made a 7-3 run before the quarter ended to make it a 49-48 game.
Â
Mid-America Christian continued their run into the final quarter, grabbing a 51-49 lead on a Sarai Rodriguez three-pointer. Texas Wesleyan responded with a furious 12-0 rally highlighted by a
Falesha Fuller jump shot for a 63-53 advantage with 6:41 left in the game. The Rams kept the Evangel offense at bay the rest of the way to seal the 78-66 victory.
Â
The Evangels shot better in the second half, but Wesleyan still held the edge from the field, 40 percent to 36 percent. TWU out-rebounded MACU 59-32, and also out scored their opponent 44-14 in the paint. As a team, Texas Wesleyan tallied 21 assists in the win.
Â
"Today was a real team victory," touted head coach
Bill Franey. "Our post players came up big, but things like great defense, hustle, and selfless play, things that don't show up in the box score, that's what made a huge difference today." Â
Â
Threats led the charge, matching her career high in scoring and rebounding with a 30 point, 15 rebound double-double. Cox also posted career highs in the same categories, posting a double-double behind 23 points and 17 boards, adding four steals in the process. Hooks did a great job at distributing the ball and notched six assists in the win. Louallen took down nine points, while Chargois tacked on eight points, five boards, and four assists on the night.
Â
The Lady Rams will prepare for a meeting with the University of Science and Arts in Chickasha, OK on Thursday, January 4. That game is scheduled for a 6:00 pm tip-off. Â
