Pioneers Hold Off Rams, 2-0

PLAINVIEW, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University men's soccer team (4-7, 1-1 SAC) suffered a 2-0 Sooner Athletic Conference loss at Wayland Baptist University (6-3-1, 2-0 SAC) on Saturday.

In a remarkably tight contest, the Pioneers struck quickly when Emmanuel Emmas gathered a rebounded save and scored his fourth goal of the season just under three minutes in.

In the first half, Wayland Baptist outshot the Rams 6-5, and the Pioneers had the only corner kick of the frame.  Marko Jovanovic made two saves while Joaoa Souza made one for WBU.

The second half was much of the same, but the Pioneer defense stifled the Rams' thoughts on a comeback by allowing only two shots in the period.

Late in the game, the Rams went all-in, pulling their goalkeeper up into the action.  However, the equalizing goal never came and WBU's Javier Parry hit an open net in the 89th minute to account for the 2-0 final score.

For the game, the Pioneers outshot the Rams 17-7 and led 8-1 in corner kicks.  Jovanovic (4-6) made seven saves including seven in the second half to give his team a chance.  Souza (6-3-1) made two stops in the shutout effort.

The Rams will return to action on Tuesday, when they host Mid-America Christian University.  That game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start at Martin Field.
