OKLAHOMA CITY, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (18-3, 5-3 SAC) dropped a 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-23) match against No. 14 Oklahoma City University (17-3, 8-0 SAC) at Abe Lemons Arena on Saturday.
Â
The Stars kept a steady edge throughout the entire match, and that started from the first set. OCU held a 13-7 lead before the Lady Rams fought back, cutting the score to a 22-18 deficit on a
Brianna Jaramillo smash. The Stars held serve though, taking a 25-22 win.
Â
Texas Wesleyan tried to hold a lead a few times in the second set, but those opportunities turned out to be few and far between.
Sasha Robinson beat the Oklahoma City defense for a service ace to give the Rams an 11-10 lead. Wesleyan got some breathing room at 16-13, highlighted by an
Alanna Hayhurst laser beam for a point. The set quickly shifted to a staunch defensive showcase, with a few blocks by both teams. The Stars regained the lead before another Hayhurst kill made way for a 24-22 lead. The Rams seemed poised to even up the set, but a 4-0 OCU rally lifted the home team to a 26-24 win.
Â
The third set was tied 10 times as neither team could get a foothold. Texas Wesleyan took a 4-2 run highlighted by
Sarah Benitez ace to gain a 20-16 advantage. The Stars battled back again with a 5-1 run to tie the game at 21-21. Hayhurst and Mohle teamed up for two consecutive kills to establish a 23-21 lead late. Three TXWES attacking errors let OCU off the hook as the Stars took the match, 25-23. Â
Â
The Stars defense held the Wesleyan attack in check as no player hit the double digit mark in kills. Robinson notched a double-double behind 17 assists and 16 digs.
Chalon Anderson led all players with 17 digs. Hayhurst tallied nine kills, 12 digs, and three blocks. Mohle had eight kills, while Jaramillo tacked on six kills and four blocks.
Â
The Lady Rams will come home for a match with Southwestern Assemblies of God University on Tuesday, October 4 starting at 7:00 pm at the Sid Richardson Center.
