Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Shorthanded Rams Battle OCU to 1-1 Draw

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University men's soccer team (6-8-2, 3-2-2 SAC) overcame an early red card and nearly pulled off a stunning upset of Oklahoma City University (11-3-1, 5-1-1 SAC) before settling for a 1-1 draw at Martin Field on Saturday.

Alejandro Rey, one of six Texas Wesleyan seniors playing in their final regular season home game, came up with a tremendous effort that nearly delivered a win.

In the 25th minute, Ojuok Otieno played a ball ahead to Rey who netted his third goal of the season to put the Rams on top 1-0.

Three minutes and 20 seconds before the intermission Texas Wesleyan's Preston Baker and Oklahoma City goalkeeper Vladimir Kalajdzic met at a 50/50 ball some 15 yards outside of the box.  Little if any contact was made, but Baker was shown a red card, and the Rams played the final 68 minutes of the game shorthanded.

The Rams outshot the Stars 5-4 in the first half, but battled a 10-0 foul count.

The remainder of the game was a battle of wills as the Stars were bent on making the Rams pay for the man deficit, while Texas Wesleyan desperately clung to their 1-0 advantage.

In the 49th minute, Logan Stewart's attempt glanced off the post marking one of three OCU shots that hit the frame on the day.

Rey had good looks in the 52nd, 78th, and 84th minutes, but Kalajdzic was up to the task each time.  In the 85th minute Stewart ripped a shot from inside the box that Marko Jovanovic was able to get a hand on.  The rebound came back to Stewart's feet, but his second attempt hit the crossbar.

With 1:29 remaining in regulation, the Rams' defense finally cracked and Petar Djurdjevic scored the equalizer to send the game to overtime.

In the overtime period it was Rey again with a quality chance in the 93rd minute, but his shot from 20 yards out sailed just high.

In the 96th minute OCU's Alexandre Taiar hit the post, and two minutes later, Stewart appeared to be offside, heard no whistle, and missed an open goal wide to the right.

The second overtime period was highlighted by a header from Ross McArthur in the 108th minute, but the shot sailed high and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

After Texas Wesleyan outshot OCU 5-4 in the first half, the Stars outshot the Rams 26-12 for the game.  The Rams were whistled for 20 fouls and shown five cards while the Stars were called for only six infractions and two cards.

Jovanovic (6-7-2) and Kalajdzic each made five saves in the contest.

The Rams will return to action on Thursday, when they travel to Siloam Springs, AR, to take on John Brown University.  That game is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start.

With just two games to play, the Rams trail Southwestern Christian University by three points for fourth in the SAC standings.  The top four teams in the conference will host a first-round playoff game.
