Lady Rams Honor Seniors With 3-1 Win Over Cavs

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (26-4, 13-4 SAC) notched another home victory on RAM-Out Cancer day with a 3-1 (25-12, 25-13, 19-25, 25-17) result versus St. Gregory's University (19-13, 10-6 SAC) at the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday.

Texas Wesleyan Athletics honored three talented student-athletes who played in their final regular home season match today. Morgan Reese, Carli Owens, and Alanna Hayhurst help the volleyball program to 49 wins with a .766 winning percentage, and a 24-8 record in conference play in just two seasons.

The Lady Rams came out like wildfire, quickly advancing to an 11-3 lead led by Hayhurst and Brianna Jaramillo. Texas Wesleyan then ended a 6-0 run on a Shelby Stinnett kill to make it a 16-6 advantage. Stinnett tallied five of the last seven points, including an ace to take the set at 25-12.

The momentum spilled over into the second set, as the Lady Rams trotted out to a 6-1 lead capped on a bruising Hayhurst kill. The Cavaliers cut the deficit to 9-5, but Wesleyan rattled off a 7-0 rally capped by a Jaramillo kill for a 16-5 advantage. A 4-1 run that ended on another Hayhurst smash helped the Rams outscore their opponent 8-5 to the finish for a 25-13 win.

The Cavaliers were not going down without a fight, and showed that in the third set by grabbing a quick 7-2 lead capped by a Gabby Ware kill. SGU continued on the lop-sided run and extended the lead to 12-4. The Lady Rams caught a 5-1 run to cut the lead to 22-19 on a Kayla Hayes ace, but the Cavaliers held on to take a 25-19 third set.

Texas Wesleyan rebounded nicely in the fourth, earning a 6-1 lead capped on a Brittni Mohle laser kill to start. A 6-2 run later the set put the Lady Rams in full control with an 18-10 lead, helped along by a couple of thundering Hayhurst kills. Wesleyan kept a hefty pelting of kills raining down on the Cavaliers, helping to fuel the offense to a 25-17 win with the senior Hayhurst fittingly tacking on the match ending kill.

After the match, head coach Kimberly Weaver talked about how much her three seniors mean to the team, "So much of our program's success is because of Alann, Carli, and Morgan. Carli brings an energy that is contagious, and the comeback she has made after her injury is inspiring. Alanna has shown tremendous growth over the past year and a half. She is always willing to do what is best for our team. Morgan is a fighter. She never gives up, and is always willing to sacrifice for our team. It has been an honor to coach them. I can't wait to see everything they accomplish after graduation."

Hayhurst led the Lady Rams, matching her career high with 16 kills, adding 17 digs in her 12th double-double of the season. Stinnett tallied a double-double behind 12 kills and 18 digs. Jaramillo tacked on 10 kills. Sasha Robinson posted her 19 th double-double of the year on 42 assists and 11 digs.

The Lady Rams will play the regular season finale on the road in Plainview, TX in a match with Wayland Baptist on Saturday, November 5 at 11:00am.
