Lady Rams Knockout Eagles In SAC Quarterfinal

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (28-4) earned a 3-1 (25-12, 18-25, 25-15, 25-14) win over Southwestern Christian University (19-13) in a Sooner Athletic Conference Quarterfinal match at the Sid Richardson Center on Tuesday.

Wesleyan is now 10-0 all-time against the Eagles, as head coach Kimberly Weaver recorded her fourth straight SAC tournament opening round win.

The Lady Rams got out to another dominating start by posting 12-4 run capped by a Brianna Jaramillo kill to prompt a Southwestern Christian timeout. TXWES continued to push the issue, lighting up the SCU side of the floor with a fury of kills from Shelby Stinnett and company. Stinnett posted six kills including the game winning point, giving the Lady Rams a 25-12 first set.

The Eagles were able to control the second set after establishing a 4-1 edge on a Shaeli Munroe kill. Carli Owens and Kiersten Mebane got the Rams on the board, but the Eagles managed a 7-3 lead in the process. Both teams let out a fury of swings and this kept the momentum slightly in the SCU camp. The Eagles extended the advantage to 19-8 before the Rams started to battle back. Sasha Robinson fooled the defense with a kill and Morgan Reese laid down a service ace made it a 21-15 game, but Wesleyan ran out of time and SCU took a 25-18 win.

Texas Wesleyan got back on track in the third set, taking big swings early and often to gain an 11-7 lead capped by a Jaramillo smash. That started a 10-1 rally capped by a Kayla Hayes ace for a 20-9 advantage. Shelby Stinnett ended the set with a kill and a 25-15 win.

It was all business for the Lady Rams in the fourth set, stomping out to an 8-0 lead capped by a Jaramillo kill. Alanna Hayhurst tacked on another thunderous kill to give the home team an 11-point, 14-3 advantage. Things never got better for the Eagles, and back-to-back Hayhurst kills capped a 25-14 drumming to take a 3-1 match win.

Jaramillo hit .600 behind 13 kills and six total blocks. Hayhurst posted a double-double on 13 kills and 14 digs while hitting .522. Chalon Anderson led all players with 22 digs. Robinson posted 48 assists. Stinnett led all players with 19 kills in the win.

The Lady Rams will play Wayland Baptist University in a SAC Semi-Final match on Friday, November 11 at the Hutcherson Center in Plainview, TX. The start time for that contest is TBD.
