NORTH MIAMI, FL: The Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team (6-3) picked up a decisive 73-45 road win over Johnson & Wales University (2-10) at the Wildcat Center on Monday.
Â
The Lady Rams made short work of the Wildcats, returning to the court after an eight day hiatus. TXWES held their opponent to just 25 percent shooting while dominating the boards, 45-34.
Â
Johnson and Wales started the contest by hitting a pair of three-pointers, hinting at a possible shootout. The Rams took a 5-0 run capped on a
Bailey Broadnax jumper in the paint to grab a 9-6 lead midway through the opening quarter. The Lady Rams recovered after the fast start by the Wildcats and ended the quarter on a 9-2 run after an
Ashlie Bruner bucket made it an 18-8 game.
Â
Joelle Patterson nailed triple for the Wildcats to start the second, but again the Lady Rams had their way offensively.
Alycia Louallen got the lead to double digits with a two-point shot for a 24-13 advantage before
Falesha Fuller capped the 10-2 rally to make it a 34-15 lead. The game went completely dark for the last 3:14 of the half, as the only point was a Bruner free throw to make it a 35-15 lead at the break.
Â
The second half proved to be more of the same with the Lady Rams running the score up to a 22-point, 45-23 advantage. The Wildcats found some life midway through the third with a 10-1 rally to cut the deficit to 46-33 on a Kwannita Janvier jump shot. JWU got into some foul trouble in the last two minutes of the quarter though, and the Rams were able to work the lead back up to 54-33 before the end of the quarter.
Â
Ashlie Bruner drained a shot from beyond the arc to start the final quarter to give Texas Wesleyan a 26-point lead at 59-33 and the Rams never stepped off the gas.
Nicole Gleason found the bottom of the net from downtown to cap a dominant team performance to make it a 73-45 final.
Â
Bruner led all players with 19 points on 5-10 shooting with a pair of three-pointers.
Katelynn Threats poured in 11 points and nine boards in the win. Fuller went 5-9 for 11 points. Broadnax posted nine points and nine rebounds for the Rams.
