Lady Rams Get Tough Break In Final Day Of Cowtown Classic

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (2-4) took two close losses in the final day of the Cowtown Classic on Saturday. The Lady Rams dropped a 9-6 game to St. Mary's University (TX) before taking a 4-3 loss to the University of Houston-Victoria.

Against the Rattlers, the Rams got on the board in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. Dani West and Kaley Batchlear posted singles with no outs to set up an Aizia Azarcon sacrifice fly for the lead.

TWU broke loose in the fourth inning with a five run rally starting with a lead-off error. Batchlear hit a RBI single to start the scoring.  Two more crossed the plate on another fielding error. Mackenzie Kirkpatrick capped the rally with a RBI base knock to make it a 6-0 advantage.

The Rattlers chipped away at the lead with a four run fifth and grabbed another in the sixth to cut the lead to 6-5 with an inning to play. St. Mary's tied the game with a Maci Dean double to make it 6-6.

Prachyl reached first on an error in the bottom of the seventh, and Lauren Davis advanced her into scoring position with a single, but Wesleyan could not get a run across and the game moved to extra innings.

The Rattlers got three runs across in the eighth due to a pair of costly Ram errors to concede a 9-6 game to St. Mary's.

In the game with Houston-Victoria, the Jaguars got a quick lead with a two run first.

The game stayed that way until Wesleyan cut into the lead in the fifth inning. Lauren Davis doubled to lead off the inning. Hannah Tomme brought in a run with a base hit to make it a 2-1 deficit.

Wesleyan tied the game in the sixth with a Kayla Prachyl sacrifice fly to center field. The seventh was quiet, forcing extra innings. The Lady Rams took a lead in the top of the eighth with a Davis RBI double for a 3-2. Hannah Beam and the Jags had different ideas as the pitcher blasted a walk-off home run to take a 4-3 win.

The Lady Rams will come home to take on Clarke University on Thursday, February 18 for a double header starting at 2:00 pm at Sycamore Park.
