Rams Take Series From MACU With Walk-Off Heroics

GRAND PRAIRIE, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (12-12, 3-3 SAC) took a 4-3 win in the final game of series over Mid-America Christian University (11-10, 4-2 SAC) with a walk-off suicide squeeze play at the Ballpark at Grand Prairie on Sunday.

Wesleyan was first on the board, getting an early lead in the second inning. Dylan Measells hit a single off the glove of MACU ace Junior Obeso, and stole second to put a runner in scoring position. Alex Gudac was prepared to give himself up on a bunt, but he place it perfectly in the infield on the third base side of the pitcher's mound to put runners on the corners with no outs. Hayden Muns slapped a base hit through the right side for a RBI. Ryan Adam did his job by going the opposite way to make sure another run score on a RBI groundout for a 2-0 lead.

Obeso cleaned things up from there, and really pitched a great game for six straight innings. The Evangel right-hander made things easy on his defense, getting into a lot of 0-2 counts leading to seven strikeouts.

The Evangels chipped away at the lead with one run in the third, fifth, and sixth innings to take a 3-2 lead.

MACU had the Rams down to their last two outs in bottom of the ninth with Muns at the plate. Muns came through with a base knock in the right center gap. Luke Zrostlik checked in to run and got to second on a stolen base. Lorenzo Lynch came up huge in a clutch pinch hit spot dropping in a single into shallow center field scoring Zrostlik for a RBI single, MACU made a costly error and Lynch advanced to third on a two base error. In a surprise move, head coach Mike Jeffcoat put on a suicide squeeze play, and it worked. Lynch sprinted toward home plate with the pitch and Ryan Adam placed a bunt past the pitcher for the walk-off win.

The Ram pitching staff did a fine job in a collective effort. Joseph Lyall went three innings on only two hits, gave up one run, walking three and striking out four. Alex Lopez stepped in with four solid innings, giving up two runs (one earned), on four hits, one walk, and one strikeout. Stephen Yancey (2-1) earned the win in two scoreless innings, allowing no hits, no walks, with one strikeout.

Blake Seaton led the Rams in the two spot going 3 for 4. Muns went 2 for 4 with one RBI. Adam notched a pair of RBI behind a 1 for 5 effort. Lynch went 1 for 1 in a clutch pinch hit spot with a run score and on RBI.

The Rams will travel to Ada, OK for a game with NCAA DII East Central University on Wednesday, March 18 starting at 3:00pm.
