Streak Ends at 17 - Rams Take Game 2 14-1

SHAWNEE, OK:  The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (33-15, 16-5 SAC) saw its 17-game winning streak come to an end with a 6-4 loss in the opener of a Sooner Athletic Conference doubleheader at St. Gregory's (21-28, 7-14 SAC) on Saturday.  The Rams wasted no time starting a new streak as they came right back with an emphatic 14-1 win in the night cap.
 
In game one, the Rams got on the board first with an RBI double from Alex Gudac in the top of the first, but the Cavaliers got a two-run single from Easton Bennett in the bottom of the Frame.  An RBI single from Jordan Weber followed by a two-run double from Logan Hart pushed the score to 5-1 in the second inning.
 
The Rams got back in the game in the third.  Ryan Adam led the inning off with a solo homer.  Three batters later, James Ziegler cut the margin to 5-4 with a two-run bomb (his second in as many days).
 
The Rams got  a leadoff double from Chandler Schoelkopf in the fourth, a one-out double from Ziegler in the fifth, and a leadoff double from Jake Davis in the sixth, but all three were left stranded.  SGU capped the scoring with an RBI single from Michael Garcia in the bottom of the fifth.
 
David Martinez (5-6) worked all seven innings to earn the win.  He allowed four runs on nine hits.  Ricky Hull (6-3) took the loss after allowing five runs on six hits in two innings pitched.  Alex Lopez tossed the remaining four innings, allowing a run on five hits.
 
Ziegler went 3-for-4 with a double and a home run in the loss.
 
In game two, the Cavaliers cracked the scoreboard first with an RBI single from Peter Daley in the second inning.  The Rams put 13 runs on the board in the next four innings.
 
In the third, Blake Seaton crushed a three-run homer.  The Rams batted around in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring five runs in each inning.  The fifth featured RBI doubles from Casey Moses, Ziegler, and Hayden Muns, and a two-run double from Dylan Measells.  The Sixth featured consecutive RBI singles from Zielger, Gudac, and Muns followed by sac flys from Measells and Schoelkopf.
 
An RBI double from Eirck Quesada in the sixth capped the scoring at 14-1.
 
Steven Yancey (7-1) earned the win after allowing a run on three hits while striking out five in five innings.  Ryan Chen and Wade Regas each turned in a hitless inning of relief.  Vicente Rodas (2-5) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings.
 
The Rams pounded out 16 hits in the game.  Ziegler went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored.  Ryan Adam went 3-for-5 and scored four runs.  Measells knocked in three runs, and Moses, Gudac, and Muns each had a pair of hits.
 
The Rams will return to The Ballpark in Grand Prairie on Tuesday, when they take on Arlington Baptist College.  That game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start.
 
Ramblings

 
- The Rams are 7-2 all-time against St. Greogry's and 1-1 against Arlington Baptist.  They are 42-27 all-time in SAC Play.
 
- The 17-game winning streak was the program's longest since the 2008 team won 19 in a row.  The Rams outscored their opponents 115-37 during the streak.
 
- The Rams are currently tied atop the SAC standings with Southwestern Christian at 16-5 in league play.  The Rams have a three-game series with SAGU remaining while SCU will play against No. 22 USAO who also features only five conference losses (13-5).
 
- In the 3-game series with SGU, James Ziegler hit .583 (7-for-12) with 2 2B's, 2 HR's, 5 RBI, and 4 R's.  He had an OBP of .615 and slugged 1.250.
