Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Lady Rams Dominate Day One Of Coca-Cola Classic, Run Streak To 18 Sets

PLAINVIEW, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (6-0) made it 18 consecutive sets with a pair of 3-0 match wins over the University of Northwestern-Ohio (2-4) and the University of the Southwest (1-1). The Lady Rams beat the Racers 25-21, 25-18, and 25-17 before knocking off the Mustangs 25-13, 25-12, 25-16.

The Lady Rams jumped all over the Racers to start the match, grabbing an 8-3 lead capped by an Alanna Hayhurst kill. Northwestern Ohio fought back to cut the lead within one point at 15-14 on a Racer block. Another UNOH block tied the set before Carli Owens kept the Rams in front with a smash. Brianna Jaramillo followed that up with a pair of kills to make it a 19-17 game in favor of Texas Wesleyan.

Lady Ram errors kept the game closer than it should have been, but Shelby Stinnett connected on a few late kills to make it a 23-20 advantage. Kiersten Mebane and Owens teamed up for a block to make it set point before another Stinnett kill made it a 25-21 first set win.

Set number two was a tightly contested one as the Racers never trailed by more than four points (18-14). UNOH led 9-7 before the Lady Rams fought to regain the lead. Texas Wesleyan methodically secured a 20-15 lead on a Mebane kill. That set up a 5-2 run to the end, capped by another Hayhurst swat to take the game 25-18.

In the third set the Wesleyan offense overwhelmed the Racers posting a 12-2 lead built by a 9-0 rally that culminated in a Chalon Anderson service ace, followed by a Jaramillo kill, all capped by a successful Mebane attack. The game quickly got out of hand from there as the Racers did not have enough fuel to fight their way back into the set. Jaramillo made it a 23-12 advantage. Wesleyan made a few errors, but were never in any danger as Ariel Emory and Jaramillo teamed up for two consecutive kills to end the match 3-0 with a 25-17 win.

Jaramillo led the Lady Rams all players with 12 kills, hitting .625 for the match. Hayhurst picked up second double-double of the season with 11 kills and 12 digs. Mebane added eight kills in the win. Sasha Robinson led all players with 26 assists in a double-double performance, adding 11 digs as well. Stinnett tacked on nine kills for the Rams. Anderson was good for 14 digs in the match.

The Lady Rams handled business against the University of the Southwest, starting in the first set with a 4-0 rally capped by an Anderson ace. Texas Wesleyan hit on a 7-0 run capped by a Hayhurst smack to make it a 12-4 lead. The Rams finished the set on a 9-2 run to win the first set 25-13.

The Mustangs tried to keep the second set close, but Wesleyan again made a push for a decent sized 5-0 run capped by a Stinnet, Owens block for a 13-5 lead. Hayhurst and the Lady Rams went on a hitting spree and before two blinks the Lady Rams held a 20-9 advantage. Britni Mohle got in on the action with a late kill to extend the lead to 23-10, before Shaylee Griffin made it set point before a Mustang error lifted TXWES to a 25-12 win.

The third set was tied 5-5, like clock-work the Rams bounced out to a small 13-7 edge with a Sarah Benitez ace. A 6-0 rally late made it a 23-13 lead on a Jaramillo, Emory block. Jaramillo finished the match on swat to make it a 25-16 win.

Hayhurst led the way with 11 kills, adding two aces, five digs, and three block assists. Mebane posted seven kills. Stinnett made it six kills in the win. Morgan Reese tallied 17 assists, while Anderson tacked on 12 digs in the win.
