FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women's soccer team (5-4, 1-0 SAC) opened Sooner Athletic conference play with a decisive 3-1 win over St. Gregory's University (4-4, 0-1 SAC) at Martin Field Tuesday evening.
The Rams developed numerous scoring opportunities from the start, but did not finish in the first half.
Nikki Lockwood made three saves in the period to keep the game scoreless at the break.
In the second half, Texas Wesleyan was able to finish.
Drea Molina scored her sixth and seventh goals of the season in the 50th and 56th minutes.
Samantha Moore made it 3-0 when she drilled a shot from the top of the box in the 71st minute.
SGU got on the board with a long free kick from Beth McHale that wound up perfectly placed at the top of the net.
"We are happy with the result, but definitely have some things to work on," commented head coach
Josh Gibbs. "We came out a little flat today, but credit to the players for fighting through the slow start and having a great attack-minded performance."
Lockwood (5-2) finished with three saves in 83:33 minding the net for the Lady Rams.
Gibbs also praised senior midfielder
Kaylie Hart for work that does not appear in the box score. "
Kaylie Hart was a big spark for us today," he said. "She was a machine in the midfield and never lost a 50/50 ball. That was a great example set by a senior captain."
The Rams now prepare to go on the road and take on Wayland Baptist University in SAC action on Saturday. That game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start in Plainview, TX.
