Lady Rams Run Rally To 12 At KWU Tournamnet

SALINA, KS: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (12-0) tacked on two more wins to finish up the Kansas Wesleyan Tournament on Saturday. The Lady Rams went 3-1 (25-21, 25-18, 25-27, 25-21) over Benedictine College (4-5) before handling Southwestern College (4-5) 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-19).

The Lady Rams jumped all over Benedictine College to start the match. Two consecutive kills by Shelby Stinnett made it a 12-6 contest. Wesleyan took an 18-10 advantage and looked poised to take the set after extending the lead before the Ravens posted a rally to cut the lead to 23-17. Brittni Mohle made it a set-point game with a kill that split the defense. Stinnett ended things with a powerful shot for a 25-21 win.

The second set found Wesleyan with a 7-3 lead to start, capped by an Alanna Hayhurst kill. Carli Owens posted a smash kill to make it a 16-10 edge. The Ravens cut the lead to one-point before an 8-2 run highlighted by a Sasha Robinson service ace to take a 25-18 win.

In the third set, the Ravens found a foothold and played hard not to give up any ground to the Wesleyan attack. Jaramillo started a 7-0 rally that was capped by a Hayhurst ace to make it an 11-5 advantage. Benedictine fought back and tied the set at 15 apiece and the two teams were deadlocked until the Rams found a slight 24-23 edge after Stinnett put one down. The Ravens made a comeback though and 5-1 run ended the set, 27-25 in favor of Benedictine College.

The Lady Rams reset for the fourth and bounced out to a 5-2 lead on a Chalon Anderson ace. Wesleyan kept that small lead and extended it to a 14-10 lead on a Hayhurst smash. The Ravens came back to tie the set 14-14, but Wesleyan kept on grinding and slowly pulled out to a 23-19 edge after another Stinnett smack. Hayhurst ended the match with a nice kill to take the set 25-21.

Stinnett led all players with 19 kills and notched another double-double with 10 digs. Hayhurst posted another double-double with 10 kills and 17 digs. Anderson earned a season high 40 digs in the win. Sasha Robinson also grabbed a double-double behind 16 digs and 10 assists. Morgan Reese was also on point with 18 assists and 11 digs.

The first set in the match versus Southwestern was tightly contested to start, but a 6-0 rally capped by a Stinnett kill gave the Lady Rams some breathing room at 16-8. Texas Wesleyan dominated the game from there, outscoring their opponent 9-5 to end it with a 25-13 win.

Jaramillo and the Rams let loose in the second set, grabbing a 7-1 lead to start. Owens made it a 10-point game with kill at 17-7. Ariel Emory tacked on a kill to give the Lady Rams the second set 25-12.

The third set was tied 7-7 before Texas Wesleyan busted out a 10-0 rally that included six total aces, five consecutive from Stinnett, making it a 17-7 advantage. The Moundbuilders were forced into too many errors to recover, and Wesleyan picked up their 12th consecutive match.

Anderson led the Rams with a double-double behind 14 digs and 10 assists. Stinnett had nine kills and seven aces. Emory tallied seven kills in the win.

The Rams will open conference play on the road with a match against St. Gregory's University on Tuesday, September 6 starting at 7:00 pm.
