Lady Rams Toast New Year With Blowout; Bruner Breaks Record

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team (8-4) ran past Crowley's Ridge College (3-13) in a 104-68 blowout at the Sid Richardson Center on Tuesday afternoon.

The Lady Rams had the privilege of hosting the first home game of the New Year, and did not disappoint. The 104 points scored today is the third highest scoring output in program history. It was the highest scoring output since February 4, 1989 when the Lady Rams won a 112-99 over Incarnate Word.  Ashlie Bruner broke the school record steals in a game with 11, just one more than previous record holder Tiffany Hill. Bruner was also one assists away from a triple-double.

"…Ashlie does a lot of things for us that aren't on the stat sheet, for her get in the record book is a great thing…" commented head coach Bill Franey on Bruner's record. "She's been leading the conference in assists all season, so breaking the record for steal shows how well-rounded her game is."

Crowley's Ridge went all in on the three ball and despite a slow start, the Pioneer showed how dangerous they could be. The NAIA independent went 18-38 for 47 percent from downtown.

Texas Wesleyan grabbed a 6-0 lead in the first three minutes of the contest, but a pair of Pioneer three-pointers quickly erased the effort. Bruner completely took over the game for about a minute and a half, scoring two, getting two steals, two assists, and one rebound in the short time. That helped the Rams to a 14-6 edge before extending the score to 31-15 on a Nicole Gleeson splash from long range to end the quarter.

The two offenses continued to duel, but the Lady Rams were overpowering on the defensive end. Aylcia Louallen got a layup and the foul for a three-point play to make it 41-24 mid-way through. The Rams were firing on all cylinders, outscoring their opponent 23-2 spanning over six minutes to end the half up 58-26.

Texas Wesleyan continued the onslaught in the second half as Crowley's Ridge found a bit of life on the offensive end. The Pioneer hit five triples to cut the deficit to by 10 points in the three minutes of game time. The Lady Rams buttoned up on defense and kept a sizeable 81-55 lead despite Crowley's Ridge shooting 72 percent from long distance in the third quarter.

The final stanza was more of the same as the Pioneer had no answer on defense. Wesleyan ran out the clock on the way to a 104-68 win.

"I thought our team played very unselfish today," said Franey. "It was good to see our players sharing the ball and finding multiple ways to score."

Six Rams scored in the double figures in the win. Bruner led the way 18 points, 11 steals, nine assists, and eight boards. Louallen went 7-8 from the floor and 3-3 behind the arc in an 18 point day. Threats posted 14 points and 12 rebounds. Falesha Fuller, Bailey Broadnax, and Gleeson finished with 13 points each.
