CHICKASHA, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team (9-4, 2-1 SAC) delivered a 69-66 overtime win in comeback fashion at the University of Science & Arts (3-6, 1-2 SAC) on Thursday.
Â
The Lady Rams started strong, dropping an 8-0 rally capped by an
Ashlie Bruner jumper with 6:22 left in the opening quarter. It a 12-7 contest before Wesleyan took total control with another 8-0 rally capped by an
Alycia Louallen layup to take a commanding 20-7 advantage.
Â
TXWES held on to that sizeable lead until a 7-0 Drover run cut the lead to 28-21 in the second quarter. The Rams held onto that seven point lead and ended the half with a 30-23 lead.
Â
Texas Wesleyan continued their hot streak from the floor, shooting 44 percent in the first half. USAO could only muster 27 percent from the field.
Â
Science & Arts flipped the script with a 14-4 run that took a large chunk out of the third quarter and gave the Drovers a 39-34 edge. Bruner earned a steal and
Katelynn Threats used the glass to regain a 42-41 lead with 1:22 left. USAO hit the last five points of the quarter to grab a 46-42 edge before the end of the third.
Â
Wesleyan battled right back to start the fourth quarter, with Louallen nailing a shot from downtown. The Drovers countered with a three ball as well, trying to keep up with the dangerous Ram offense.
Bailey Broadnax capped a short run with a jumper to tie, but USAO held serve.
Â
The Drovers jumped back out a 6-point lead with two minutes to go in regulation. That lead would evaporate in just over one minute of game time, and Wesleyan found a two-point lead after another Louallen triple to make it 60-58 with 40 seconds to go. Jocelyn Jeffery put up a shot with five seconds left that missed, but good hard-nosed play led to a Taylor Alexander tip-in off the rebound to send the game into OT.
Â
Science & Arts protected home turf, foregoing any pleasantries with a Dierra Ely three-pointer that sent the place into a frenzy. Â TXWES tightened the reigns and picked away at the lead with a 7-0 drive that killed almost three minutes. The Drovers had to foul to try and preserve time, but to no avail as the Lady Rams escaped with a 69-66 win.
Â
Louallen was fire and led all players with 23 points.
Falesha Fuller posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards. Threats tallied 16 points in the win. Broadnax added 11 rebounds for the Rams. Bruner finished with 10 points and eight boards.
Â
The Lady Rams will be back in conference action when they host Southwestern Christian University on January, 7 starting at 3:00pm at the Sid Richardson Center. Â
