Lady Rams Rock Eagles

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team (10-4, 3-1 SAC) used timely defense to get past Southwestern Christian University (8-6, 0-4 SAC) 57-49 at the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday.

The Lady Rams used a massive 18-0 run in which the defense shut down their opponent for eight minutes and ten seconds of game time. Wesleyan also shot 50 percent in the fourth quarter and out rebounded the Eagles 50-37 on the way to a conference win.

Southwestern Christian opened the game with a 7-0 run as the Lady Rams were a bit sluggish to start. Katelynn Threats put in a jumper to get on the board and Alycia Louallen later scored to make it a 13-6 game, trying to get the offense in gear. The Rams tacked on two more to make it a 13-8 deficit after one quarter of play.
The Lady Rams charged right through the Eagles to start second quarter, dropping in four straight from behind the arc to take a 20-13 lead for starters. Katelynn Threats got a steal to make way for Louallen to give the Rams their largest lead of the night at 24-16. Maranda Janz would finally break the eight minute scoring drought with a triple and the Eagles fought back. Southwestern Christian posted a 9-0 rally to regain a momentary lead before Threats got a bucket and the foul to keep a 27-25 edge with a minute left in the half. TXWES went in the locker room with a 29-26 lead.

Wesleyan maintained a small cushion for the better half of the third quarter, but the offense went cold and allowed SCU to take a 38-32 lead heading into the home stretch. Some good passing to start the fourth quarter vaulted the Lady Rams to a six-point, 44-38 advantage midway through. The Eagles cut the lead to two at 48-46 with 2:46 remaining, but the Lady Rams killed the last few minutes to win 56-49.

Bruner tallied 15 points, seven assists, and five rebounds for Wesleyan. Threats notched a double-double on 14 points and 17 boards. Bailey Broadnax added seven points and 14 rebounds in the win.
