FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University Men's Soccer team (4-8-1, 2-4-1 SAC) used a goal by Tyler Brooks in the 78th minute to top Southwestern Assemblies of God University (1-9-3, 0-5-1 SAC) by a final score of 2-1 Tuesday night at Martin Field.
Anthony Atilola gave the Rams an early boost when he scored off of an assist from Micah Day in the 15th minute.
Momentum swung to the Lions midway through the first half, and Joe Caballero levelled the contest with a goal in the 38th minute.
After an even 8-8 shot count in the first half, the Rams stepped up the intensity in the second half when they outshot the Lions 11-4. Still, the Lions did not go without a fight. SAGU goalkeeper Edgar Chavez turned away a TXWES penalty kick in the 67th minute and made all three of his saves in the second half to hold the score at 1-1.
In the 78th minute Atilola worked the near right wing and snuck a pass in to Tyler Brooks who found the net for the game-winner.
For the game, the Rams outshot the Lions 19-12 and led 8-4 in corner kicks. Texas Wesleyan battled a lopsided 13-6 foul count, but Bastian Blumenberg came up with four saves to preserve the win.
The Rams will return to action on Friday, when they travel to Chikasha, OK, to take on the University of Science & Arts. That game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
