OKLAHOMA CITY, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (26-4) earned a runner-up finish in the 2017 Sooner Athletic Conference tournament after a 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-19) loss to Oklahoma City University at Abe Lemons Arena on Saturday.
Â
As the conference tournament runner-up, the Lady Rams receive an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship Opening round. This is the tenth time in school history the volleyball program has reached the tournament, and the first time since 2005.
Â
After an extremely emotionally and physically draining 3-2 nail-biter over SAGU yesterday, the Lady Rams faced a red hot Stars team playing on their home turf. OCU is riding a six-game win streak and are 18-1 since the middle of September.
Â
Kayla Hayes continues to be consistent out of the libero position, leading the team with 11 digs.
Brittni Mohle led the attack with six kills.
Tierra Coverson hit .385 with five kills and a solo block in the match.
Hannah Altman added eight assists, seven digs, and three kills for the Rams.
Â
The Stars established sizeable leads in the first and third sets that led to wins. TXWES hit a match high of .289 in the second set, but the Stars were able to manage .304 and gritted out the win. No player was able to hit double digits in the kill category.
Â
The NAIA Opening Round starts Saturday, November 18. The 44-team field will be announced in a live selection show hosted by Play NAIA on Facebook. The show is set for Monday, November 13 starting at 10:00 a.m.
