Lady Rams Show Grit in 70-58 Loss To No.17 JBU

SILOAM SPRINGS, AR: The Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team (17-11, 9-8 SAC) dropped a 70-58 game to No. 17 John Brown University (21-7, 13-4 SAC) at Bill George Arena on Thursday.

Texas Wesleyan made the Golden Eagles sweat after erasing a 20-point deficit in the fourth quarter, but the home team was able to hold off the charging Rams in the last two minutes of the game.

Bailey Cameron poured in 19 first half points to establish a fortified lead for the Golden Eagles. Ashley Bruner picked up a defensive rebound and fed Katelynn Threats in the paint for a 4-3 edge early, but JBU worked a 13-1 run to a 16-7 advantage before the end of the first quarter.

Alycia Louallen drained a triple to start the second quarter, but John Brown found favor in their star forward as Cameron dropped in eight consecutive points to keep a 24-12 lead. The Golden Eagles ripped off a 10-2 rally before Bailey Broadnax stopped the outburst with a turn-around jumper to make it a 34-18 game at the break.

John Brown continued to shoot lights out from behind the arc in the second half, and ran up the lead to 18-points with a Jordan Martin three-point shot. The Golden Eagles kept the momentum with a 20-point cushion heading into the fourth.

The Golden Eagles let off the gas in the fourth quarter, allowing the Lady Rams to take a 13-0 rally highlighted by an Ashlie Bruner old-fashioned three-point play before Nicole Gleason dropped in a pair of buckets from downtown to get within eight points at 66-58 with just over a minute remaining. John Brown escaped the comeback though, taking a 70-58 win in regulation.

For the game, the Golden Eagles shot 45 percent, while TXWES shot 38 percent. The Rams held the edge in rebounding 36-27, while outscoring their opponent 32-22 in the paint.

Threats, Broadnax, and Gleason each posted 12 points for Texas Wesleyan. Bruner tallied 10 points, eight boards, and seven assists in the game.

The Lady Rams are planted in fifth place in SAC regular season play with one game remaining. Texas Wesleyan will travel to Muskogee, OK in the regular season finale with Bacone College on Saturday, February 25 starting at 1:00 p.m.
