WICHITA, KS: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (10-7) dropped a pair of low scoring games in the second day of the 2017 Friends Invitational on Saturday. The Lady Rams were on the wrong end of a 2-0 game with Doane University (10-4) before taking a 2-1 loss to the University of Saint Mary (5-9-1).
Â
In the first game of the day, the Lady Rams took on the 2015 GPAC champs and 2016 runner-up Doane University Tigers. The two teams were locked in a defensive struggle the entire ball game with the exception of a second inning solo home run off the bat of Lindsey Dietz, giving the Tigers a one run lead. The Lady Rams threatened, but left nine runners on the base paths that led to a 2-0 loss.
Â
Bailey Terry led the Texas Wesleyan bats, going 2 for 4.
Lauren Wernet went 2 for 3 at the plate. Wernet (5-2) tossed all seven innings, allowed just two runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out two.
Â
An unearned run was all the difference in the contest with the University of Saint Mary in another low scoring affair.
Â
The Spires played small ball to gain an early edge in the first inning. Saint Mary got a lead-off single from Tycee Coplan and advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice. Hannah Gradillas singled her home for the 1-0 lead. The second run would score due to Lady Ram throwing error in the fifth.
Â
The Lady Rams got on the board in the sixth inning after Prachyl led the inning with a base hit before
Samantha Vasquez singled the runner home to make it a 2-1 game. Texas Wesleyan could not make up the deficit in the final inning and the Spires escaped with the win.
Â
Vasquez led the Lady Rams at the plate with a 3 for 3 performance and one RBI. Rosenberry (2-1) picked up the loss despite another strong outing. The senior right hander threw seven innings, allowed one earned run on five hits, issued four walks, and sat down one batter.
Â
The Lady Rams will open Sooner Conference play on Friday, March 10, hosting Mid-America Christian University in a double header starting at 1:00 p.m. at Sycamore Park.
