Gunter Walks-Off, Lady Rams Double Up Falcons

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (12-7) doubled up the University of Texas of the Permian Basin (4-19) at Sycamore Park on Wednesday. The Lady Rams grabbed an 8-7 walk-off win in extra innings before taking game two, 4-1.

In the first game, the Falcons struck first, with a sacrifice RBI from Adri Berzoza. UTPB also used a prevailing southwesterly wind to vault three home runs and establish a lead in the late goings.

The Lady Rams quickly erased the UTPB lead after a Bailey Terry sacrifice bunt led to an error and a run. A wild pitch put up a second run, and Lauren Gunter capped the drive with a RBI sacrifice bunt for a 3-1 lead after one inning gone.
The Falcons tied the game at 3-3 on a pair of solo home runs in the second and third innings by Cindy Juarez and Jessica Gonzalez and doubled their score on a Cyera Qunitana three-run home run to left in the fourth.

Mackenzie Kirkpatrick drove in a run in the fifth with a double down the right field line to get the Lady Rams within one at 6-5.

Lauren Wernet poked a lead-off base hit up the middle to start the bottom of the seventh. The Lady Rams down by one, moved the runner to third before a wild pitch allowed Wernet to get under the tag at the plate to tie the game and force extra innings

The wild pitch played a big role again in the top of the eighth, allowing UTPB to grab a 7-6 edge.

Dani Jackson used her speed to beat the Falcon defense on an infield single and took second on the play, allowing Prachyl the tie the game. Gunter followed that with a liner into center field for the 8-7 walk-off win.

Justine Cielinski (1-0) notched her first collegiate win in 4.2 innings of relief work. The freshman from Lockport, IL allowed a run on three hits, walked one, and sat down two.

In game two, the two teams were deadlocked in a scoreless battle before the Lady Rams bats awoke in the fourth inning. Texas Wesleyan posted base hits from Terry, Gunter, and Wernet that led to a Samantha Vasquez bases clearing double down the left field line for a 3-0 lead.

The Falcons got one back with back-to-back doubles in the fifth to cut into the lead, but Brittany Rosenberry (3-1) was as solid as she has been all season in the win. The senior tossed all seven innings, allowing one run on seven hits, walked none, and fanned three.

The Lady Rams will open conference play on Friday, March 10, hosting Mid-America Christian University at Sycamore Park. The double header is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
