FORT WORTH, TX: The12th ranked Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (32-11, 13-5 SAC) finished a three-game Sooner Athletic Conference series sweep of St. Gregory's University (25-16, 9-8 SAC) by taking both ends of a doubleheader at Sycamore Park on Friday. The Rams took game one 2-1 and game two 4-2.
After allowing a leadoff single in game one,
Stephen Yancey promptly erased that runner with a double-play and then was in cruise control for the remainder of the contest.
The Rams put two runs on the board in the third inning with an RBI single from
Luis Roman and a pair of SGU errors.
Yancey set down thirteen Cavaliers in a row before Brandon Marrero touched off a solo home run with two outs in the fifth. That was the lone blip on the radar for the junior out of North Richland Hills, TX. Yancey (7-3) needed just 85 pitches to complete all seven innings and allow just the one run on three hits while striking out seven and walking none.
SGU hurler Mychal Yarbor (7-2) finished with a similar bottom line at two runs on four hits, but the Rams worked him for 122 pitches while drawing five walks in seven innings.
In game two, the Rams took the victory without plating an earned run.
St. Gregory's manufactured a run in the top of the first after a leadoff single from Jordan Martin.
Both teams took advantage of defensive miscues to score a run in the third inning. The Rams then tied the game in the fourth when
Aidan Laurini was hit by a pitch and later scored on an SGU error.
In the sixth, the Rams loaded the bases after a leadoff error and two infield singles from
Aidan Laurini and
Kiki Menendez.
CJ Ateek broke the tie with a sac fly, and Laurini later scored on a wild pitch.
As in game one, there was now assistance necessary from either team's bullpen.
Alex Lopez (7-2) worked all seven innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk while striking out eight. Matt Oxner (6-2) took the loss after allowing four unearned runs on five hits in six innings pitched.
The Rams are back in action on Tuesday, when they travel to Texarkana, TX, to take on Texas A&M-Texarkana. That game is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. start.
