Â
Head coach
Priscilla Morgan knows the value of a hot start, but has a broader vision, "…getting four wins was just one goal in our big picture for the season. We showed really good signs over the course of the tournament, but there were also areas where we need to focus our training. I'm very proud that the team continues to strive to get better every time we step on the court."
Â
The Lady Rams picked up where they left off yesterday, taming the Mustangs by hitting a season high .455 in the match. The Mustangs were held to just .145 hitting as the offense just never found its bearings. TXWES added nine aces and nine blocks in the win.
Â
Shelby Stinnet and
Brianna Jaramillo paced the Rams with nine kills each.
Dana Lohrke was efficient one again, knocking down six kills, hitting .556.
Sasha Robinson led the team with 17 assists, while
Hannah Altman posted 13 assists.
Â
The Wildcats gave the Lady Rams their best performance of the early season, rising to the high level established by the home team, and Stinnett knows this could turn into a common theme. "I definitely think teams will come in playing some of their best games against us, and we are ready for the challenge. Those are the most exciting games and they really test your abilities, which I think will be key experiences in getting us mentally prepared to fight for the bid to nationals and be successful."
Â
TXWES grabbed the first set without much protest from Wiley, but the Wildcats played smarter in the second. The Rams gave away 17 points in errors in the second set and Wiley took advantage with a 25-17 win. Texas Wesleyan rebounded nicely, weathering the blows from a Wiley offense that was hitting on all cylinders. TXWES closed out the fourth despite Wiley erasing a six-point deficit mid-way through. Jaramillo was big down the stretch, posting three kills in the late goings to help the Rams seal the match. Â
Â
Shelby Stinnett led the way again with 13 kills and 10 digs.
Brittni Mohle showed her swagger with a 10 kill, 10 dig night. Jaramillo had 10 kills, Robinson tacked on 27 assists, and
Tierra Coverson checked in with five blocks in the match.
Â
"Since it's my last season, it was a great feeling to get back on the court," added Stinnett. "…tons of excitement from everyone ready to get after it."
The Sooner Athletic Conference went 10-5 overall against the Red River for the tournament, as the two host schools both went 4-0.
Â
Texas Wesleyan will travel to San Antonio, TX to play in the Hotel Indigo at the Alamo Saints Classic, hosted by Our Lady of the Lake University, starting on Friday, August 25. The Rams will play Benedictine College (KS) at 1:00 p.m. before taking on #19 Georgetown College(KY) at 5:00 p.m.
