MARSHALL, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women's soccer team (1-0) got a pair of second half goals from freshman
Tameir Grosvenor en route to a 2-0 rain-soaked season-opening win at Wiley College (0-2) on Sunday.
Â
The two teams played to a scoreless draw in a physical first half. The Wildcats outshot the Rams 14-9 while the teams were whistled for a combined 22 fouls.
Â
After
Lauren Bond worked the first half in the net for Texas Wesleyan, turning away all seven shots on goal that she faced,
Christy Zwart (1-0) worked the second half and picked up four saves of her own.
Â
The second half began in a heavy downpour, and the Rams were able to capitalize. Grosvenor knocked in her first collegiate goal in the 49th minute. That 1-0 score continued to hold up late in regulation, and Grosvenor put the contest away with a second strike in the 88th minute.
Â
"It's always good to win," Head Coach
Josh Gibbs commented after the game. "We weren't at our best, but the girls really fought and earned a team result. Our attack is very dangerous this year, and we saw that in the two goals from Tameir. We have things to improve, but I'm very excited moving forward with this group. Now we have to turn our attention to another tough opponent in TAMU-Texarkana on Tuesday."
Â
The Rams have one more road contest ahead of their home opener against Jarvis Christian on Friday. They will travel to Texas A&M-Texarkana on Tuesday. That game is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. start.
