Lady Rams Drop Overtime Contest in Texarkana

TEXARKANA, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University women's soccer team (1-1) suffered a 4-3 loss in overtime at Texas A&M-Texarkana (2-2) on Tuesday.

Head Coach Josh Gibbs expressed confidence in his team following the loss.  "We are a young team going through some growing pains," he commented.  "The fight in the girls is second to none, and we will be fine.  We just have to trust the process, and each other."

Texas Wesleyan's Tameir Grosvenor picked up where she left off.  On Sunday, Grosvenor, a freshman from DeSoto, TX, scored both of Texas Wesleyan's goals in a 2-1 win at Wiley College.  On Tuesday, she staked the Lady Rams to a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal in the 22nd minute.

Christy Zwart worked a scoreless first half in the net, and the Lady Rams led 1-0 at the intermission.

Both teams stepped up the offensive intensity in the second half, each taking 12 shots in the period.  Texarkana's Olivia Okoye tied the game in the 54th minute and then gave the Eagles a 2-1 advantage with a goal off an assist from Alexandra Martinez in the 69th minute.

Goals came in a flurry at that point.  Less than two minutes after Okoye's second goal, McKenzie Dyer tied the game at 2-2 with an assist from Grosvenor.  Three minutes later the Eagles were back on top with a strike from Ashley Bainton.

The Eagle lead lasted just three minutes before Dyer knocked in her second game-tying goal of the day, and the game remained knotted at the end of regulation.

In the overtime period, the Rams got a pair of looks from Taylor Ross and Samantha Moore, but it was Texarkana's Samantha Sharpnack-Isom who found the net for the game-winner in the 97th minute.

Texarkana's Tinotenda Chumarda (2-2) made 11 saves in the win.  Lauren Bond (0-1) was tagged with the loss after making eight saves in the final 51:18.

The Lady Rams will play their home opener on Friday, when they host Jarvis Christian College.  That game is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. start at Martin Field.
