FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men's soccer team (2-4) suffered a 3-1 loss at the hands of the University of St. Thomas-Houston (1-2-1) at Martin Field Saturday evening.
The game got started on the wrong foot as the Rams quickly dug a 2-0 hole. A foul just outside of the box led to a free kick that Carlos Marquez bent around the wall and into the right corner of the net just 1:42 into the game. Two minutes later, Jacob Evans scored on an assist from Ignacio De Bejar to push the score to 2-0.
UST had numerous dangerous opportunities in the remainder of the half, but Bastian Blumenberg came up with four saves to hold the score at 2-0 at the break.
The Rams came out of the intermission as the aggressor and the change paid off early. Texas Wesleyan got its first corner kick opportunity in the 54th minute and Eder Falcon lofted a ball into the box that Micah Day finished to get the Rams within a goal.
The momentum was short-lived however as UST's Edwin Saldivar scored just two minutes later and the Celts rode out the 3-1 victory.
Blumenberg (2-3) a freshman out of Santiago, Chile, made a career-high eight saves in the loss. UST's Sebastian Santos made four saves in the win.
The Rams have a break in their schedule to prepare for Sooner Athletic Conference play. Their SAC opener will take place on Thursday Sept. 28, when they host Bacone College. That game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Martin Field.
