BROWNWOOD, TX: The Howard Payne University men's soccer team (2-0) scored a pair of second half goals including one in the 89th minute to top Texas Wesleyan University (1-3) by a final score of 3-2 on Thursday.
The game was a late edition to the schedule. Texas Wesleyan's contest with the University of Houston-Victoria had been canceled while the school recovers from damage done by Hurricane Harvey. The Yellow Jackets also found themselves needing to fill a spot on the schedule, and the game was agreed upon late Wednesday afternoon.
The Rams got the scoring started in the 41st minute when
Uriel Pacheco scored with an assist from
Juan Rey. The TXWES lead was short-lived as HPU's Michael Westerman scored just 2:22 later.
Howard Payne outshot the Rams 8-2 in the first half, but the score remained tied at the intermission.
Luis Pumarejo put the Rams back on top early in the second half when he scored off an assist from
Zion Balogun in the 51st minute.
The Yellow Jackets tied the contest with a goal from Collin Saylers in the 79th minute. It appeared the contest was destined for overtime, but Dylan Person found Daniel Lemus for the game-winning goal with just 1:05 remaining in regulation.
In the game, HPU outshot Texas Wesleyan 17-8. Texas Wesleyan's
Bastian Blumenberg (1-3) made five saves in the loss, while HPU's Andrew Hackney made three saves to preserve the win.
The Rams will look to get back in the win column on Thursday, when they host Paul Quinn College. That game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Martin Field.
