Lady Rams find groove, top Aggies in four

FORT WORTH - Texas Wesleyan University Volleyball (15-8, 11-2 SAC) shook off a Set 1 loss to dominate Oklahoma Pandhandle State Friday night at the Sid Richardson Center in four sets (23-25, 25-15, 25-13, 25-9) on Dig Pink Night.

The Lady Rams improved their hitting as the night went on: 10 kills / 6 errors in Set 1; 12 kills / 4 errors in Set 2; 15 kills / 1 error in Set 3 and 17 kills to just 2 errors in Set 4.

It was a banner night for Chastiny Brown. Brown recorded a season high 11 kills with a season low 0 attacking errors, totaling a .524 hitting percentage, also a career high. Brown becomes the first Lady Ram with at least 10 kills and no attacking errors in a game this season. Sasha Robinson also set a season high in kills with 15, also contributing 14 assists. She fell two digs short of a triple double.

Brenda Pargas led all passers with 24 assists. Jasmine Creek had 16 digs while Brittni Mohle dug 12 shots and Ashley Curry kept alive 10. Mohle, who had 19 kills against the Aggies earlier in 2018, fell one successful attack short of a double-double. Mohle got hot in Set 3, earning three kills to build a 9-3 lead. That was just before Brown had four consecutive spikes to push the game to a 14-6 Lady Rams advantage. Brown scored four of Texas Wesleyan's six points during a 9-3 run that bumped the Rams up to a 16-5 lead in the final frame.

Set 1 was a sluggish start, but was backed by some outstanding play from Oklahoma Panhandle State. Libero McKenna Clement was all over the floor and seemed to save every shot that came her direction (led all defenders in the match with 19 digs). An early 7-2 deficit prompted an OPSU timeout. After the stoppage, the Aggies fire was lit. A 10-1 run prompted Texas Wesleyan Head Coach Jessica Ransom to call for time, but Quiara Pointdexter and the rest of the Aggie offense was relentless. It was only the second time in 11 tries OPSU managed to steal a game from the Lady Rams, the other coming last season (26-24).

The Aggie energy didn't last. With the Rams up 15-12 in Set 2, Texas Wesleyan strung together six-straight points - two kills from Robinson and Tierra Coverson and two Aggie errors. OPSU accounted for nine ball-handling mistakes.

WHAT'S NEXT
Rise and shine. Texas Wesleyan faces a much improved Wayland Baptist at 11 a.m. Saturday in a critical Sooner Athletic Conference battle after sweeping Wayland earlier this season. The 7-6 Pioneers took unbeaten Southwest Assemblies of God to five sets Friday evening in Waxahachie after getting swept by the Lions the first go-around.
