FORT WORTH - Texas Wesleyan Volleyball (16-8, 12-2 SAC) continued its recent dominance of the Sooner Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon at the Sid Richardson Center, dismantling Wayland Baptist (8-13, 7-7 SAC) for their seventh-straight conference victory in four sets (25-12, 25-9, 21-25, 25-12).
Tierra Coverson led the offensive attack with 13 kills. She is the fourth different Ram in as many matches to lead the team in kills (
Brittni Mohle,
Sasha Robinson,
Dana Lohrke). Mohle contributed 11 against the Pioneers while Brown - coming off an 11-kill, 0-error Friday performance, had nine kills hitting .278.
Brenda Pargas and
Sasha Robinson doubled up as passers with 24 and 17 assists, respectively.
Three different players led the defense.
Jasmine Creek, Mohle and
Ashley Curry each had 13 digs. For Curry, it was her fourth double-digit dig performance, her third in the last four games and her 13 against Wayland set a season-high mark. Coverson led the block game as well, with 3.5.
Texas Wesleyan dominated the first two sets as Wayland started flat. The Pioneers had just six kills in each of the first two sets and dug early 12-3 (Set 1) and 18-9 (Set 2) deficits. The wheels fell off in Set 4 when the Pioneers committed 10 attacking errors and left Fort Worth with a whimper. Amber Daniel led Wayland in kills (12), digs (10) and aces (4) but didn't receive enough support from her supporting cast.
Brenda Pargas had four aces on the other side of the net for the Lady Rams. Texas Wesleyan moved into fourth in the conference with 122 aces on the season, balanced by Pargas' 22 and
Sunny Clark's 26.Â
Everybody got involved offensively late. The last six kills of the match were from six different players: Pargas (to go up 8-2), Robinson (to go up 9-4),
Hannah Altman (13-4), Coverson (17-8), Mohle (20-10) and Brown (21-10).
The Rams are on pace to improve on their 13-3 regular-season conference record in 2017 with six games left on the schedule. The opening round of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament is slated for Tuesday November 6.Â
